I've done similar with a work ute years ago when first started with Rio and new jack about petrol or diesel engines,i picked up from light vehicles our breakdown ute after a service and noted that the fuel tank was just under 1/4 full and thought I'd do the right thing and fuel it up.
So off to the bowers I go 3-43 ute (landcruiser) and fill the tank with 43 ltrs of diesel, I proberly travelled about 500mtrs when the engine died which had me concerned.
I grabbed the radio and called up my supervisor and advised him that the ute stopped working and he then sent one of the sparkies down to checkout the problem and after a good look we deduced that petrol engines don't like diesel.

Now I know the difference between the two.

    cheers,
    Chappy.

Just though Id share an unfortunate experience I had on my way home from work on Friday afternoon.
It'd had been a very trying week and I was well over it, on my way home the fuel light came on but I really just wanted to get home and have a beer! I recalled that I had a few things to do and decided to quickly duck in and fill up.
Being a Friday arvo the general population leaves their brains at work all in a rush to start their weekends, and this Friday was no defferant. I waited and waited in line for one of the fuel bowsers and eventually got my turn.
I looked at the nozzles and as I went to grab one the next car behind me decided that he wanted to see how close he could get to the ass end of my car.. Retard.. Anyways with that small distraction I gone ahead and grabbed the nozzle shoved it in and started pumping. Meanwhile the old lady next to me was struggling with the simple task of placing her nozzle back onto the bowser which took her about four goes.. More distractions and my need for a beer growing i've racked up $187 "click" it's full. I payed and got the hell outta there as soon as I could.
Driving down the road about a km.. Burr burr bup burr??? Wtf..?? My car starts to miss and surge... What is going on here??
And then I've realized.. F@$k me I've just filled my car full of unleaded!!!
Such a sinking feeling and I couldn't believe what I'd done. I immediately pulled up in a parking spot, shut it off and called the Mrs.
"You dickhead" she proceeded to tell me "how much money did you waste?".. Don't worry about that I've said, just grab as me as many jerry cans as you can and the jiggle hose and get down here..
She's come down and it turns out that you can't siphon fuel from a 150 series.. What am I going to do now? I've climbed underneath and looked for a drain plug or something, nothing.
We ended up calling a tow truck so I could get it closer to home and needless to say I nailed quite a few red cans that night.
The next morning, still not sure what to do I had an idea.. I've jumped in the mrs's can and darted down the shops to get some bits and pieces.
I grabbed an inline 12v fuel pump some hose and fitting as well as some wire and alligator clips.
I removed the intake hose from the filter assembly and hooked up the Macgyver inspired pump and ran another hose into the first jerry can..
connected the alligator clips to the battery and vuala!! out comes the poison!!
About an hour and six jerry cans later I put 20L of fresh diesel in and pumped that through as well, changed the filter and put another 20L in.
Nervously started the engine and left it to idle for about 45 mins. It revved slightly higher than usual for the first 5 mins but was back to normal after that.

In summary I still cant believe what I did, but after talking to a few people it appears that this is a pretty common thing. the tow truck driver said he comes across about 1-2 a week which makes me feel a little better.
Anyways one thing I did was to google what to do and how to get the fuel out.. which I didn't have much luck with so this is why i'm writing this story and hopefully for the next poor bastard so they'll know what to do.
Yes guilty M'lud, not once but TWICE in fact the first being a money saver at Mundrabilla before the Nullabor pulled in at the bowser it's all by itself and has bio written on it and theres all ready a 4by filling up so looks like a duck ..........till I went to pay and THEN she says "course you know thats petrol aye " thats when my cheap $130 fill up doubled instantly then that sinking feeling sets in................no buddy your not alone by a long chalk LOL

You know, we have restricted openings for unleaded, why not introduce a square nozzle for diesel? I always have a good look before I pump.

How can you miss the diesel handle , it's always got a woman getting a Latte parked in front of it , it stinks and usually has diesel all over the handle .

I always wondered... what does one do with 150L of mostly petrol part diesel? Can you run it though a petrol engine safely? Or your mower? Or is it useless? If so where do you dump it? I'm thinking it's probably frowned upon to tip it down the sink.

If you have it at home (and your sure as hell shouldn't) give the local rural fire brigade a call, they can mix it up with a bit of oil for drip torches, use it for practice fires, etc. At work we dump it in with the waste oil, 60-80L in 1000L of oil wont make a difference to anybody. If its mostly unleaded (like 95%) it should run your mower fine, but really, how often do you mow the lawn

Why waste our petrol and diesel , why not use something like atomic waste or chemicals that might render someone impotent or chemically castrated . Two words . The Hage . Sorry off topic .

Gotta put my hand up as well, started topping up my 80 series one day when after about 10 litres saw the error of my ways! Quickly swapped hoses and put in another 80 odd litres of diesel. I figured a 10 / 1 ratio of diesel to unleaded would be ok to run, the old girl never missed a beat, and I am a lot more observant at the pumps now!

Hey Beale you're lucky you managed to get all the unleaded out . I accidentally put a jerry of water in the fuel tank in the NT . We tried the separate fuel pump at the inlet to the fuel filter but only got a few litres of water out . The car was towed on a tilt tray to Birdsville and we found all the water in the aux tank . Luckily the motor wasn't started so after cleaning out the tanks we were back in action .
                        Cheers Ross
