  • Unpleasant Odour

Thought I would share some pics of what I discovered when I searched for the source of an unpleasant odour coming from the vents of my Fathers Prado.
He had been complaining for a number of weeks, that he couldn't find where the smell was coming from.

The old shirt rag was packed on top of the filter element, you can just see part of it in first pic.

What we can't figure is how the rat got the rag in the vehicle as it was near a bench close to where the Prado was parked.

Now. The search for the chewed wiring, in my experience they always leave that calling card. One of my mates was tasked to find the smell in a two week old rodeo once, found dead baby mice in the heater box. Apparently it still had a smell at the 40k service (last time he saw it).

Ha ha. Little buggers get everywhere. Doing a pre-trip check on Fraser last week, popped the bonnet on my BIL's vehicle and found a heap of chewed wiring. No smells though

Yes ... you might want to check the wiring around that area too (there's lots near the air filter), particularly where the wiring loom comes through to the left of the filter.

A couple of years ago, I had an inner-suburbs rat (french background, I assume) destroy my wife's VW Golf. It was catching snails from the garden and eating them on top of the engine block (escargot?)! There were snail shells everywhere throughout the engine - and PLENTY of chewed wires. $4000 of labour later, the engine wiring loom still had issues we couldn't find.

The damn rat kept coming back, so I ended up cable-tying some bags of rat-sack under the engine bay, and checking it daily (amongst other rat baits around the area). It ate three of them, 3 days in a row. Then never saw the culprit again. I now keep a little satchel in the engine bay - helps me know if we have had any more 'visitors'.

Yes have been wondering about the wiring and whatever else it or they may have chewed.
So far, have not had anything stop working.
They are also very cunning, as they won't take any baits and avoid the traps.
