  • Google Maps

Guys I have been playing around on Google maps today, and I have started to ‘map’ the local area, of the 4x4 tracks that I have been hitting, manly for my use. When I went to save it I saw a “Collaborators” section where I could add other users to see and edit the maps.

Well I was thinking maybe we should have a Pradopoint maps. With one of the mods ‘owning’ the map, and who ever wants to be as Collaborators, that way we could add knowledge of the local areas we all live and we can know what tracks are good or….you know what I mean.

You can draw lines on the map, so you could draw over the tracks with a line of the below colours, and give a description of the track. As well as the lines, there are icons, so you could say have a green track, with a yellow maker on it to show a difficult obstacle, or a fallen tree blocking the path, with a stop sign.
    Green line – easy
    Yellow line - Medium
    Red Line – Hard.

These are just rough ideas. If someone wants to run with it they can. I’ll be doing my own anyway but I’d like to share my data.

But I reckon that should be sweet, your thoughts?

    Cheers
    - Dean

    i like it!

there's a public one floating out there on the net, only thing with them is that you don't necessarily know what other peoples version of "easy" is.

        Dean,

That sounds like a top idea. It would certainly be of benefit to all of us who wanted to try somewhere new or missed a trip but did not know what to expect. Great for calling on local knowledge as well to find those really great camping spots to het away from it all.

Great idea Dean. I'm all for it.

          On a related note...

I don't know whether you (and others) use Google Earth, but I highly recommend it when trip planning. The resolution compared to Google Maps is amazing. If you take the lat/long from Google maps for your Scadens Ridge Road 'Steep Descent' (-33.319810, 151.380000) and go to Google Earth - you can almost see the tyre tracks if you zoom in. Well almost

You need to download some software to your computer but it's brilliant. All your tracks etc are saved locally, so it doesn't serve the same purpose that you are proposing, but used in conjunction will prove a powerful trip planner.

Perhaps you already use it ? IF so, sorry for telling you how to suck eggs  Anyone else - if you don't use it - DO!

I waste ALOT of time on PP and almost as much on Google Earth looking for new tracks to explore. ops: ops:
