  • dog gone blues!!!

gday all, were doin a trip up to Darwin in dec . towing a market direct camper with our new 150prado... its a bit off topic guys, but we want to take our dog with us. I was going to build a dog cage and install it on top of the tool boxes on the front of the camper. however im worried about the exhaust fumes.. the clearance from the rear muffler tailpipe to the cage hight will be 600 ml... anyone ever done this before, thought about extending the tailpipe out further under the draw bar of the camper.... not to sure what to do here or if its to dangerous for ol mate mate in her cage. cheers

I wouldn't want to be your dog. Travelling in NT in summer, in a box out in the sun sucking fumes all day.
Our border collie has his spot in the back, with the aircon directed on him as he is a long hair.
If you can't keep you best mate in the car, leave her at home.

    Border Collie. Worlds smartest dog.

    post a picture
    Fridge out.

The water bowl is a non spill one. About $10 from Petbarn.

Yeah I wouldn't want to be your dog either . Dust ,bugs , rocks ,heat exhaust fumes , snakes , crocs , pommy backpackers ,Do her a favour and leave her at home no matter what breed she is .but I'm a bit soft . My dog has her entire second row lounge with 2 windows to hang out and her own separate aircon/ climate control system . Part of the reason I bought the grande . Yes I do realise you have to fit the missus and kids somewhere . Hang on sounds like a good spot for the missus . What's that old joke ? If you want to know why a dog is a mans best friend , lock the dog and the missus in the boot of the car for an hour and see which one is happy to see you when you open it .

Why not put the dog in the car and then put whatever was in the car on the trailer where the dog was going to be?

Yeah bud don't put your mate through that........Mine rides up front in the 200......Put a harness on him and regulary stop for a drink/ piss break and enjoy the stop I'm sure your four legged friend will.......

Very hot from now on in and if he's not used to it, it could be a case of life or death if you don't keep a close eye on them.

thanks anyway everyone... wasn't to sure about this hence the question... we live in western qld so well aware of the heat,, I cant put the kids in the box ( 5 daughters) so that's why my train of thought was for making a cage.... :-) no where else to put her... was goin to deck the cage with sections of pine, drilled with 50mm holes throughout for airflow.... use a 12v waterpump hooked up to a mister type spayers throughout the cage with wet hessian bags so it stays cool... elaborate plan... but my downfall was the exhaust fumes as im not sure about that side of things... apart from that the cage would be 1.4mt long 800 high and wide. so quite comfortable and much bigger than an airline dog cage they use.... shes a staffy cross. cheers all

5 daughters!! You poor man! And you want to go travelling with them all day trapped in a car?....I'd put the the dog up front and build a box in the trailer with the fridge and a bar!

Now understanding your needs I would build a box, insulate the front and top, build air vent like a snorkel on the top, small solar panel to run a fan to create more flow if you had to stop and leave her in the box. Seen this on a ute when travelling. Extend the exhaust down or to the side as well.
You come from Moranbah so, as you said the heat is not new for your dog. Maybe install a small camera like a wireless reversing camera to keep a eye on her. Good luck with what you decide.
