Some good common sense tips there. Some bad ones too.
I wouldn't put an auto in D to cross a river. You don't want it changing gears on you at the wrong time.

I thought that was only an issue in manual gearboxes. You don't want water hitting the clutch plates when you change gear whereas an Auto doesn't suffer from the same issue. I'm sure the more mechanically minded can provide more detail

I would generally put it in 2nd low for most crossings with any depth, your not going to want any higher gear so lock it in and avoid the chance of it up changing, unlikely as that would be.

You really want to keep steady momentum, in theory there is no problem with the auto changing gear but in practice it's best to avoid it.

Yeah, so mechanically no reason, because it could downshift on you? It's all about the momentum? Whereas changing in a manual means danger of water getting between the clutch plates, and slipping. (And an extremely small chance of them breaking. Though I've never met anyone this has happened to)

          Agree. Constant speed and momentum.

Anyone who has driven through deep water will know that it is very heavy and hard to push out the way, so even 2nd can be a bit too tall for then engine to push several tonnes of water to one side all of a sudden.

Low 1st is probably a safer bet since speed is not important, more constant velocity and torque.

Over the bonnet deep then 1st, over the number plate deep 2nd is fine, you still need momentum and in first you need a fair few revs to keep the momentum up.

I was just thinking about loss of momentum

And I was just thinking about mechanical reasons. ☺️

Ha ha well I guess loss of momentum might lead to lots of mechanical problems 😉

Was it flowing strong? Doesn't look too high so 2L maybe

I am pretty sure I was in 2nd Low when I went across Ivanhoe

Pity that crossing is now closed.

Dunno, I was too scared to cross it when I was there in 2006.
