  • Just got a new prado 120 - need some advice

    Hi guys!

New here! I am based in Sydney and have just purchased a new Prado. Been a while looking for one, so glad I have one now! I bought the car mainly for towing my boat and doing some dirt tracks!

I have a few questions, I still haven't read the manual yet, which I will soon.

The car came with a 12pin trailer socket. I want to change it to a 7. Do I need a new wiring harness or can I use the current one that is on there? I just don't want to have any wires not being used hanging at the back of the car.

It also came with an Anderson plug, what exactly do people use these for? Should I keep it on the car?

The genuine toyota tow bar, comes with a plate to mount the adapter and anderson plug. Do Toyota normally supply the mounting plate for this? Or is that normally aftermarket? As I would like to get a new plate to fit my new 7pin plug.

When it comes to towing, do I just leave it in D4? My boat weighs 1500kgs

Any more hints or tips on the car?

Fuel tanks are huge!! I put in 75 litres, still didn't fill up and I already had 3/4 full tank.

    Thanks guys

I assume you mean the Anderson plug is at the back next to the trailer harness?
People generally use the Anderson plug to power devices (fridge, aux battery) in their camper. These plugs are designed for high current draw with minimal current losses.

I would be good to check what the anderson plug actually goes too on your car though before using it. It should have a heavy (thick) cable run to the battery and ideally be fused with either a fuse or circuit breaker.

With your 120 you should have 180 litre capacity for your fuel

Look thought the different threads on the 120 and you'll find all manner of info before you even thought of the question

      Enjoy it

Yes the plug is at the back near the trailer harness. It does have decent wiring, all connected to a fuse block etc under the bonnet. Looks like it was done professionally.

The 12 pin plug is fine to use with your 7 pin plug [assuming it is a 7 pin flat] without changing it as the top row suits 7 pin and bottom 5 pins are auxiliary wires. I run this set up myself with a 12 pin plug on Caravan and 7 pin on my 2 other trailers

Would it be a problem as it won't be sealed though? Being a boat trailer I would prefer the trailer plug to be sealed to a certain degree away from all that saltwater etc.
