  • Spare wheel cover key

    Hi

I have just purchased a 2008 prado and only came with 2 keys. One with the remote and a grey one.

The spare wheel cover has a key though, and i have a feeling none of my keys will fit. I tried the one with the remote and that didnt work. Will the grey one work? I cant try it at the moment as the car is not parked at home.

I just have a feeling its another set of keys. Would Toyota be able to provide a key?

You just push the key in and pull the lock out.

Just use the ignition key (that you use to start the car) in the spare wheel lock. As Andrew mentioned, push the key in and then the lock will just slide off.

I think he means the plastic spare wheel cover. Not the wheel nut slip on.
          Its a small silver key.
I've lost mine too. Cover is usable but unlock-able.
If it's locked that's another story.. Contact the seller as you will need to get a locksmith to make one up if it can't be found. .

            Hi Guys,

Yes I am talking about the cover. The one that has a little latch. I tried with my ignition key as I didnt get given any other keys and it didnt fit.
So looks like it is another type of key. I will call the seller but I doibt he has it. Thanks.

The cover over the wheel is a small silver key not the ignition key, looks like this [IMG][/IMG]
check centre console (bottomless pit lol) it may have been put in there or the log books. Should have two keys.....other wise contact previous owner if possible and ask if they know if it's whereabouts otherwise only option is lock smith. You may be lucky to slide it off over the wheel pulling from the bottom out if the spare is down a bit on tread. If you can spin the cover around on the wheel there's a good chance you will get it off with out undoing the latch. One it will give you the option of wether you want it on there so save you the cost of a lock smith, or it will be easier to take the cover to them then the whole car. I havnt looked at my latch recently but I'm sure there just pop riveted on so you may be able to drill the lock off and just take that to the locksmith....cheers Steve

When I bought mine I found the 'lost' roof rack keys in a door pocket a week later. Have a good look around for it

Pick the lock. Look in You Tube for Lock Picking techniques. Use a rake and a torque wrench, i.e. A bent paper clip to rake and a small screwdriver or flat bar to apply torque to lock barrel as you rake the tumblers. ... Simples, Tch... Also good idea to search car pockets as advised above.

The other possible spot I would suggest to search is within the tool kit and to check the jack storage cupboard.

Someone somewhere has a mountain of car keys - I only got one with my car -and know others in the same boat.

I don't know how people lose them. I have mine together (ignition and spare wheel cover) on the same ring as per picture. Same with log books. They stay in the top of my wardrobe and only ever come out when they require filling in when services are done. I don't leave them in glovebox so if some low life oxygen wasting scummy thief breaks into my car they won't destroy them or use them to set it on fire plus it doesn't give them your name and address and lets them no your not home...... I have have the spare set of keys with the logs books also....even got the old ignition keys from when I recently had to get new ones due to the plastic breaking on top of the key. There useless anyway cause they don't have the transponder in them as they were obviously put into new key heads....cheers Steve
