Which you would say is better . The Oricom or the Uniden.

    Hi Lewie,

I just got the Oricom UHF380 for Christmas, installed it yesterday, with a GME Aerial.
Seems to good so far, better and easier to navigate than my old GME units (they were really old).
I picked up a family of campers at the local Umina Beach camp grounds, talking to someone walking on the beach. Which is about 1km as the crow flies, but plenty of trees in between.

Oh, I'll add the controls in the hand unit are so much easier to use than the remoter head or single unit. So, comparing the two you have listed, go the Oricom..

+1 for the Uniden, had that model in my old 120. Great unit, compact & easy to fit and install. Would have put it into the 150 but found this new Uniden model UH8080NB when was having a look around at the time of upgrading.

concentrate on the antenna and its mounting location, it will be the biggest difference in good versus excellent reception

Josh, yes, thats a consideration too, I ALMOST bought a fold away mount to put the aerial up on the roof, allowing me to fold it down when not needed..

Lewie, I'll post some photos of the install on my build thread.. Got your PM

I have had experience with 5 Oricom products. 3 UHF radios and 2 cordless phone. 4 of these units failed within 12 months and replaced under warranty. One phone took a minor drop and cracked the main board.

On my second Uniden having upgraded to an 80 channel unit a year or so ago. The old 40 channel still works fine. I also have 2 sets of Uniden hand-helds including a pair of 80 channel ones. These also are all working great. I know what I would buy.

I have a Uniden Antenna, but due to requirements of my Car Club, I have a GME TX3800 with remote head. Nothing like 25 Watts of transmit power!

The Club uses GME exclusively, and rents units to Targa.

+1 for gme lewie. Have a look at the new tx3120s. Seems to fit your budget. Would be my pick at that price range and you get a gme handheld with it at the moment for free

Then do yourself a favour and buy a good quality aerial like the Rfi cdq5000 or equivalent gme, zcg scalar ,uniden with a removable mast. A lot of em do explorist packs where you get a small whip for hilly terain and around cities and a larger general purpose one for more open country.

When my Oricom dies, I will be getting a Uniden UH7760NB. It seems to be well priced for a unit with mic/speaker and controls on the remote. My Oricom UHF180 is giving me grief with static noise coming through at certain locations.

I have the aerial mounted to the awning on a knockdown bracket. The bullbar mount shakes too much and with the antenna relocated up high, I no longer need to attach a high gain antenna. Just a short whip antenna will suffice. It is also more useful in the bush as my bro-in-law had a high gain antenna and we were in the Newnes area. We were separated by a few minutes and he could hear me but I could barely make him out. So for general purpose use, the short whip antenna is pretty much permanently attached.

Wonder what the difference is: UH7760NB vs UH8060NB apart from 77 vs 80 ch

only thing I have found with all on the mic units, beware the accidental channel change as we lost our tail end charlie as he flipped from 17 to 18 by accident. Good thing we still had mobile coverage at the time

I have had a Uniden 7760 in my 120 for the last three Perth- Eastern states trips. After the first trip I replaced the 4.5db whip with a short 3db whip, and was still able to communicate with anyone and everyone further than I could see on the flat. A great radio, one of the only ones ( I believe) with a speaker in the hand-piece. Not a hint of probs with mine, so I will probably never need to replace it, but if I was, I would go with another Uniden.

                            Cheers
                            Greg
