  • Best free Andriod mapping apps with basic maps.

    Hi all,

I'm looking at using our Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 as a GPS map during trips. We don't go away that often so I'm not really prepared to spend any $ on it and we generally stick to the more populated areas. Something more than Google maps but not as far as Hema I guess.
    Anything out there like this?
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Memory Maps is on Android. Don't you have to pay for the maps to load in it though?

In NZ I use New Zealand Topo Maps Free which seems quite good as it uses topographic maps which show all the 4wd and paper roads etc. Although it uses data to load maps but if you look at the map of where you plan to go before hand it stays in the memory for when you loose signal.

I have 3 downloaded - Aus Topoo250, Aus Base Map and Hema - Australia Basemap (they do seem to be similar though)

Trick for new players is to head off too http://www.memory-map.com.au/mapchunks/ and download the maps in their entirety otherwise MM downloads them in tiles as you hover over each section of the map. This is key if you are heading outback with no internet coverage and need the next tile.

On the site you will also see a number of the other encrypted maps you can purchase. If you purchase extra maps the same applies and you copy them down in a single download

Search "Here" on the play store. It was recently released on android (free) and was orignarly a Nokia app. You can use it online and offline. I just used it on a trip to qld and it was really impressive. I've always used Google maps but tried this out after hearing good things and I was suprised.

While not 4WD oriented, for basic roads, location and info, you might like to try MapDroyd or Mapfactor Navigator. Both are free and I believe based on the OpenStreetMap database. For both these, download the app and then download the maps you need. The advantage is that you don't need internet access. I've used both in the high country and have been impressed to the detail they offer although not designed for this sort of activity.

Another advantage is that if you travel OS you can download the countries you visit!
