  • Toyota Extended Factory Warranty query.

So I've just purchased a 2010 GXL D4D though a Toyota dealer with 92,000km on it. It comes with a 3yr/60,000km Toyota factory warranty. It's a very tidy vehicle that I doubt has seen much real offroad work other than beach driving. I gather it has been in a 'slight altercation' as the front bumper is missing the fog lights and is a slightly different colour to the rest of the vehicle. At the edge of the bumper you can actually see the tape line where it's been painted.

After driving it for a few days I noticed the handbrake didn't feel right. I jacked it up, pulled the rear wheels off and discovered the handbrake not working at all on the left wheel! I'm assuming the L/H cable is seized. I am going to try and get this under the warranty even though I don't believe they warrant failures that can be attributed to rust/corrosion, which I have a sneaking suspicion is the culprit in this case. I've pulled out the centre console and where the handbrake cable splits into two, one of the cables doesn't move at all when you pull on the handbrake. Without a fully functioning handbrake they've essentially sold me a vehicle that wasn't roadworthy. On closer inspection I discovered a number of issues that I don't believe should be on a vehicle sold through a dealer...

    - Small A/C pipe support bracket missing from the secondary battery area. Pipe is 'supported' by a cable tie. I gather the previous owner had a dual battery tray and took it with him but didn't have the bracket to put back in.

    - Two of the A/C vent knobs simply fell off when we touched them. The little barbed pins that normally hold them in place are broken.
    - The front left door sometimes doesn't unlock when you unlock the vehicle.
    - The vehicle doesn't beep of flash the lights when you lock it. (I'm assuming it's supposed to as it beeps/flashes when you unlock it??)
    - The L/H headlight has a hole in it at the bottom, it also has a crack down the side that someone has attempted to Araldite back together. (Possibly due to the 'slight altercation' I mentioned earlier)

    - The rubber bumpstops for the rear door are missing.
    - The rear spoiler on the top of the rear door has a slight rattle, it's as though all the mounting bolts are ever so slightly loose but I've checked them and they're all tight.

I expect wear and tear on a second hand vehicle but I would have assumed all the basic parts it was built with should be there and they should be all in working order.

    Am I asking too much?

Dealers generally don't look to carefully over a secondhand vehicle that they have traded I've found. A quick detail and a service if your very lucky then they try and get it out the door asap. I this case looks like it didn't even get a decent service. As a minimum they should fix the hand break as it is sold with a RWC, other than that I guess they will say wear and tear on a second hand car. You can only ask and complain and hope for the best!!

I would expect the hand brake issue to be fixed by the dealer, however depending on the issue causing the failure, they may try to bill you.

For all of the other stuff, I think you have purchased a 2nd hand vehicle that is 4 years old, and that you should have checked it more thoroughly and negotiated these fixes prior to purchase.

I see your point Pog but it's obviously not possible to take the vehicle away and start pulling it apart prior to purchasing it. At the very least I don't think it should be missing any parts as they are advertising a vehicle for sale and I think one could reasonably assume that all its parts would be there. I don't think it's a case of negligence, they just didn't notice the issues I did. It's obviously had a quick dealer makeover with an oil change, a detail and the area under the guards sprayed black.

At the very least I believe the issues of the door not locking, the handbrake not working, the lack of 'locked' notifications and the A/C support bracket should be fixed under warranty. You'd take it back if it were a new vehicle and the factory warranty is supposed to be an extension of the original factory warranty. I suppose the A/C vent knobs, bump stops, rear spoiler movement and maybe even the headlight could be wear and tear and I may have to cop those on the chin.

I've spent about $125k with this dealer over the last 8 years so I'm hoping they come to the party and work with me regarding these issues.

On a side note I gather a dealership invoices Toyota Warranty for any work that is done on a vehicle under warranty so the dealership is not out of pocket. Otherwise I could buy a vehicle at one dealership and take it to another for warranty and they'd be out of pocket through no fault of their own. Can any Toyota employees confirm that?

Just found out you can't buy the A/C vent knobs, you have to buy the whole vent and they're $275 PER SIDE!!!

The handbrake should be fixed for roadworthyness..

the rest is up to the dealer,,,, you should have inspected the vehicle end to end and made a fix list as part of the contract. Then inspect again before making final payment.

it just now depends on the dealer goodwill . Seems just fiddly little things that might not cost him much.

            good luck.
            cheers mike

They probably do charge it back to Toyota but warranty is for faulty items not things missing or broken due to wear and tear or previous owner neglect, I think Toyota HQ would tell the dealer to go away. Knobs that fall off due to missing pins probably because the previous owner removed the panel and lost them isn't warranty, broken headlight after a crash isn't warranty, bump stops missing again isn't warranty, rusty brake cable isn't warranty. I think you'll be relying on the dealerships good will for any help. Buying second hand and checking stuff when you get home - hmmm? You should have had an RACQ inspection and they would have pointed most of the things you're complaining about out to you, couple of hundred well spent IMO.

When I bought mine I looked at second hand and by the time I found a good one in the condition I was happy with, without being butchered with home installed accessories by someone that had no idea it was that close to new that I just bought new. I liked at a 2010, 150 with 90000 kms on it with trim missing, scuffed panels, rubbers falling off etc etc etc and they were asking 50k, even if I hard balled them for 7k more i bought a brand new 2014 GXL with accessories ready to go - made no sense to buy second hand.

I agree that I'll probably be lucky to get the missing and broken items (Headlight) under warranty but IMO the items that aren't working should be covered by warranty as they would be on a new car, hence the 'extended' factory warranty.

To be honest I doubt many mechanics would have picked most of these issues. It drives well, runs well and is a very tidy car cosmetically. If you pull on the handbrake it does hold the car, I only noticed the issue with the left wheel when I had it jacked up and could turn the wheel. I only noticed the headlight issue after pulling the grill out to install some mesh in front of the radiator. Things like bump stops, a/c vent knobs, one door not unlocking occasionally or the lack of a beep when locking are not exactly obvious unless you're very familiar with a Prado, I didn't notice them for several days.

Appreciate everyones input, I guess we'll see what happens....

Again warranty is for faulty items not broken ones. A rusty cable us seen as a consumerable as it didn't break or just stop working it became rusty for whatever reason.

I'm guessing you negotiated a price and we're happy to pay that and the dealer was happy to accept it for the car as is and now you want items that were obviously not right then repaired at his cost - will you renegotiate the price of the car? Not having a go at you but just putting the other side out there.

                  And I don't work for a dealer.

By the way I sold my wife's WRX a couple of years ago and they could tell the spots the paint had been repaired as it was inconsistent in thickness, they checked lights, blinkers, brakes, exhaust and the report also had general comments about condition and items that would require attention within the next 6 months, I was surprised at the detail

It should be road worthy for them to sell it too you. The handbrake should have been working so its not road worthy. Technically the head lamp is a defect too with the crack in it. The hole must have been drilled to allow condensation to get out due to the crack. All the other points are just cosmetic and they will probably tell you bad luck but is worth being nice and see how you go with the cosmetic stuff. Fog lights missing ??? Is this also another road worthy issue with them missing ?? Not sure on that one as there not standard on a GX I don't think but an upgrade if you buy a GXL....Just my opinion but Id certainly hitting them up for the hand brake and light....Cheers Steve

Side vents are$ 88 on amayama plus post. Try oriental at lonsdale adelaide. They have a few writeoffs including low km engines in stock.

let us know what the dealer says, he should look after a regular customer..

Thanks for the suggestion Reddevil. How did you search the parts on Amayama? I've entered my frame number but it doesn't work and they don't seem to have a KDJ150R in the model list either.

use this. Change to your model and select spec year etc. Go to body then instrument panel then click page 2

then pick area and click on part number for full number. Enter this into amayama for quote.

Defect items should be resolved, no argument entered into.

                              Cosmetic/missing stuff ....well?

I looked at a Hilux (before settling on my GX) at a Commercial vehicle dealership. They had a 90 day bumper to bumper warranty and were happy to fix some small items I found there. I obviously hadn't bought the vehicle so far so they were cooperative! But I think you should expect similar terms especially given your history with them. Flex some muscle I say!
