  • 2014 GXL window tinting

Just trying to find the best option for getting window tint on our 2014 GXL. All my past vehicles got F1 from Tint-a-Car and no complaints about the work and the looks but, the current debate about privacy glass being UV tinted and not being UV tinted is driving me crazy. Read on another forum that all automotive glass is UV tinted to some degree. Not sure if I can post another forum's link here but there is some information here that is quiet interesting and a bit old too, http://au.toyotaownersclub.com/forum...d-glass/page-2. So by the figures in this thread there should be no need to tint the privacy glass even with a clear tint. What are people doing in general. Basically not having to tint all windows will mean almost halving the cost of full vehicle tinting. Guru's thought's or suggestions. Thanks.

Automotive glass are required to have UV protection. It is IR protection that is lacking. IR is what produces heat. Tint the privacy glass with clear IR tint for best effect in slowing the car heating up.

Tint the privacy glass with darkest legal, as well as the front windows. That makes the glass true privacy glass, and isn't too dark to see out of. Keeps the prado nice and cool too

Thanks guys, I spoke to a tint place, they said privacy windows were already over the legal 35% ratio required and he didn't know how it got through the system. So he would not put any color tint on the privacy glass, just clear tint. But as the attachment in the first post mentions that even clear glass has like minimum 91% UV cut out, is there any thing to back those numbers.

In order to avoid any further angst I might get the front windows in F1 and the others in clear tint as suggested. That might actually bring the whole vehicle to a similar level on tint on all windows.

        Thanks for all the suggestions.

Not 100% sure on the rules in ACT, but I would think they would be the same, the legal limit only applies on the front two windows, that's how it "gets through". A window tinter should know this, as you can also legally put sign writing on the back windows, essentially blocking out 100%. A window tint company should do whatever you want, just put a disclaimer on the invoice stating they are not responsible and can not ensure legality. The T35 is definatly lighter than the rear privacy glass, T16 is closer, a bit darker when new but fades to very close in about 3 months, but this is not legal.

FWIW I recently got my 03 Prado tinted. True Black 35 on the two fronts then clear film (more expensive) for all the other Privacy glass (i.e all the rest of the glass). The TB35 bought the fronts to a very similar shade to the rear of the car so I'm happy now but the wallet took a hammering. From research, Privacy glass just makes the car hotter as it basically just soot coloured (blackish) glass done at the factory.

Yes, being legal is another issue. I have 'read' that insurance companies have tried to decline claims as vehicle to being roadworthy or 'illegal' due to tinting being too dark.

Macaroon1, why was the clear more expensive?
