  • Fitting Top Mounted Intercooler to KZ-TE

    Hello Everyone,
Greetings from Republic of Georgia, Eastern Europe.I have been owning my 97 Toy HiLux Surf manual tranny for 5 years now and pretty happy with it. I combine it as daily commuter and adventure ride over here.
I have been reading quite a lot about mods on KZ-TE.As a matter of fact, I have already installed the custom made 3 “ straight pipe from downpipe on.I plan to install EGT, additional Coolant Temp gauge and Boost gauge in nearest future (actually, I have already bought them on ebay ).I also plan to install Intercooler from Prado 90 (that with manual throttle body, I guess they produced them till 98 or sth.).Before commencing wasting my money on parts,I’d like to clear several issues, that I have come along reading tons of threads on Russian and International forums. As I really trust your opinion here and see that it is quite regular mod, would like to ask you several questions.

    1. Do I need to change ECU and Turbo if I install the intercooler from intercooled prado KZ-TE.I can handle it in terms of manual work, but the problem other than fitting cooler is that cooled kz-te has different compressor (6 blades vs 5 blades on standard),it has different ECU as there are 2 more sensors for boost and air temp on intercooler and boost is going also to be a bit low (apprx. 0.1 bar) due to higher restriction of the cooler .So, do I need to adjust it through ECU, or change it or stock ECU will handle it on its own? I have seen couple of guys just installing the cooler and never cared about this at all,but what I am trying here is to make things as correctly as I can.
Some guys say that just fitting the cooler will not give any effect, or so little that it is not worth wasting money and time.I have also noticed quite an increase in exhaust temp after fitting straight pipe and I think that intercooler would benefit in keeping EGT low, what do you think?
    2. Concerning Chip tuning which option is the best and the cheapest?
    3. Will installing snorkel give any advantage apart from water crossings?
Thanx in advance and any advice, help or reference links to the guys who already have paced this way are welcome

50 views isn't much. There's lots of people looking on here but not signed up so they can't comment. And some of us aren't qualified to give you the correct answer for all your questions.
I can say yes get a snorkel but for the rest...
You may just have to wait.

Cooler should not adversely affect the flow. 0.1 bar change in boost is not even worth typing about.
Shouldn't need a new ecu with intercooler as it will run better with cooler intake air.
You can 'cheat' the amount of boost the ecu sees by insatlling a air pressure regulator in the line to the pressure sensor. Set the pressure regulator to 9 psi then run a boost controller and adjust that to give 15 psi.
I did this on a prado and run for 100000 km with no effect on reliability but it did produce a lot more torque.

          Thanks Guys,

I have been wandering around local scrapyards and got a really good bargain. on original prado Intercooler with all the piping and the stuff, sop I guess I will be buying it.What I wonder is that should I also consider swapping my ECU? I have checked the part numbers and both ECU are the same (hardware) only the last numbers differ, I assume that is firmware.

Here are the codes if anyone is interested:
          ECU KZ-TE
          ECU code
          Intercooled (Manual)

          (Automatic)
          89661-3D260 07.96-07.98
          89661-3D670 07.98-08.00

could you please explain how to set pressure regulator? do I need boost controller for that? which controller should I use?
