  • Roof Rack Awning - Sunseeker vs Oztrail

    Hi guys!

Anyone had experience with the above two brands of awning? Any pro's or con's of the two? Oztrail seems to be around $120 cheaper for the same size, so kind of leaning in that direction. Thanks in advance!

I have the 2.5 Mtr Sunseeker, very happy with it so far.
It came with all the mounting hardware.
I have been told some brands do not supply the mounting hardware with the awning.
    cannot comment on the Oztrail

Just to throw a spanner in the works... TJM Brendale are running a special on their awnings...

I've got an oztrail 2.5/2m. No issues with it at all. Quality seems reasonable too. I only use it occasionally so not fussed about a heavy duty one that will get used a lot. Prob not in the same league as a sunseeker but I got it on sale at kangaroo tent city 18mths ago. For the price and my intended use, I can't complain. I think it was $50-100 off RRP. It came with 2x L brackets and the bolts to mount to the awning but nothing to mount to the roof rack. I had to get my own t bolts

I've also added a second set of guy ropes to at 90 degrees to the others for security in wind. Don't know if its required or not but I did it anyway.

I've got the Sunseeker and I'm not sure if its my imagination or not, but they seem to look a lot sleeker when rolled up in the bag than some of the others you see getting around the place. Apart from the assumed quality with Rhino Rack, that was one reason why I paid the extra.

Me too. Very well made sturdy piece of kit and rolls up neat.

The Rhino accessories appear more expensive eg Extension pieces, whereas the Oztrails are occasionally on special and go for a lot lot less (if you buy them at that time). FWIW I tried to attach the Oztrail extension piece to my Sunseeker but the rope is too fat for the Sailtrack. These companies are crafty to make you buy their stuff. That said, there are possibly more add on's to go with the Rhino gear (high end) if you are into all that caper!!

I have an Oztrail and is fine except the cams in the poles don't always work easily and need a little work to get the poles to lock. Has survived a severe tropical storm at Ningaloo Station up north where the wind was blowing the rain horizontally. Also have a Darche cheapy on the other side which has plastic cams and much thinner aluminium extrusion and poles but still seems to be ok so far. Paid $45 for it with my roof rack.

I've got a Sunseeker 2 as well. Great awning, gets used all the time. If I'm coordinated enough I can set it up all by myself haha

Same issue with mine on the legs and the "outrigger". I have so far replaced the "outriggers" with a similat telescopic pole and the cam locks are much better. I will be replacing the leg poles next with the same ones.

Have the same problem with my ARB on locking the legs. PITA when both dont play.

I have the Sunsseker and it works well for me. Can do it by myself if i need to with out too much hassle. Not sure about the Oztrail but with the Rhino you can get parts. The wind got under mine and flipped over the car and bent the outriggers beyond repair. Was able to replace with genuine. I now peg or tie each and every time!

I may have to look in to this as mine did the same the very first time i used it and now the outriggers and legs need leckie tape to be held in desired place. Might be cheaper to buy another one tho.
