Where I live I've done 300km at night before seeing another car so the length of time on low beam is pretty much non existent. If a roo is determined there is no amount of lights that will stop it from jumping out from behind a bush at the last minute but for me having a large amount of light out front seems to relax me more while driving at night

I was on the Cobb hwy one night about three years ago, big and flat out on the Hay plain. As cars were approaching each other one would generally flash the oncoming car to drop their lights. i started to time how long it took for us to pass and it was about 8 minutes each time. Thats alot of distanced travelled on low beam.Originally posted by Bushbasher View PostI've said this before: before HID and LED you would dip your hi beam at 500 metres when approaching other traffic at night out in the boonies. Now that every trucker runs massive HID spots, and some with light bars, we're dipping at 2 - 3 kilometres. So the overall effect of this technology means that we now drive further on low beam when approaching other vehicles. That's got to be more risky. Having all the light is great if you're the only car out there or you're doing the rally-cross event with all traffic going the same way.

Maybe the best of both worlds with a dual function LED light bar...... Haven't personally got one but the concept seems interesting.....

Good advice Andrew, until you get some idiot who thinks it is "Cool" to have a lightbar or spotties mounted on the roof racks or rollbar and blinds me before they even see my clearance lights.Originally posted by AJ120 View PostSpeaking of trucks and lights, most car drivers don't seem to understand when to dip your lights for trucks, the truckie sits a lot higher and you need to dip your lights as soon as you see their clearance lights, not their headlights, if you are running these mega lumen super bright lights and don't dip soon enough, you have a half blinded truck driver hurtling towards you with a closing speed of maybe over 200km/hr, that's gotta be safe as well
Cheers Andrew
My other favourite night time drivers are those who think it's ok to travel some distance behind other vehicles with highbeam/spotties/lightbar on and not dip their lights when an oncoming vehicle dips theirs for the vehicle in front of them leaving the poor bloke they have been annoying from behind as the "piggy in the middle" with the blinded driver travelling towards them.
My general rule is if I can see tail lights in front of me (unless they have been an a$$ and left their lights up too long before overtaking me) low beam is the go.

The sad thing is that most of the times that I have issues with other vehicles and lights, it's usually a 4wd!
Don't get me started on HID low beams

And spankers who replace their low wattage fog lights with hi output spots and then around with them on as pseudo daytime running lights.Dave

If your actually driving in the bush at night and in rural areas where there are no street signs and lights and no other road users then the lightbars etc are wonderful!! Especially around those hilly corners where you are likely to hit a deer, roo, wombat, cow, fox, wild dog, etc etc etc... Distance isn't really necessary. If your after something for distance then go the spot beam hid or halogen96 GXL Prado 3.4L with 50mm HD front coils and MD rear coils with poly airbags, Bilstein shocks, 265/75R16 Federal couragia MT's, black sunnies, GME TX4600 UHF, ZCG 6.6db antenna, Narva 175 driving lights, 20" and 38" LED light bars, roof rack, Safari snorkel, ARB bar, Redback extractors and a custom 2 1/2" exhaust.

I'm not into the tech stuff in a big way. Nor am I a hard core 4WDer. I had IPF lights on my 80 series and they did the job for when driving at night. My mate had 4 ARB Intensitys fitted across the top of his roof rack on his Defender (he's got plenty of dough so money is no object with him). I tell you they turn night into day, extremely impressive. I am not prepared to spend that kind of cash hence am looking for a cheaper alternative pair of 9" LED driving lights (not interested in light bars). I am tossing up btw the Lightforce 215 LED's, the Intense Lighting Systems LEDK9's and the SA Lighting 185W jiggers. Not sure which ones.Originally posted by AB's 97 View PostIf your actually driving in the bush at night and in rural areas where there are no street signs and lights and no other road users then the lightbars etc are wonderful!! I bought some cheap lights on Gumtree. Very happy with the setup. They have served me well.
Got a 240w led bar. 2x 7" hid spots. 2x 27w square work lights. All for $500.
This is what the front looked like the other day.

The other view.
Just headlights.

High beams

Spots and fogs

The lot.

Sent from my iPhone using CrapatalkCheers
