  • 70-series to be updated and go 5-stars 2017

Just read in the front pages of 4WD Monthly that Toyota Aust. CEO (or whoever the boss is) has confirmed the Fortuner Update (based on the all new Hilux) is confirmed and will slot under Prado in 7 seat form to compete with the cheaper smaller offerings. And the big news is that after Mr Toyoda visited here last year on the 20,000km evaluation tour of the country in all there models sold here has admited that ending teh 70-series would be a mistake. He has seen and understands the following it has, the Land Cruiser brand is paramount to Toyota here and around the world.

So they are in the midst of evaluating what has to change in the 70-series and have confirmed that by 2017 the body will be updated to 5-star standard, while retaining the same underpinnings.

This is great news - I think the loss of sales to the mines is too much to pass by I think. Pretty big change of direction from two years ago when they announced its finished. Hopefully they'll widen the rear track while they are at it to make it the same as the front.

I've heard along the grapevine that the new Hilux will be a fair bit bigger than how it sit's now. Look's like Toyota are trying to do a one ute ticks all boxes, on the world wide stage. Around the same size as the Tarcoma they sell in the US. Best part is the 5lt V8 diesel apparently from Cummins. I've been told it's turbo but haven't seen anything in print yet. Now that could be worth it's weight in gold.
96 3.4 GXL, 2" lift, Poly airs in rear, 32" BFG muddies, Lightforce 170's HID's, TJM rack, Awning, Twine on board shower, GME uhf, Dual batteries & monitor, Storage system, ARB fridge, LED rear lighting, Safari snorkel, Brown Davis bash plate, Ironman winch bar, Runva 11xp winch, Roadsafe recovery points, ARB compressor, Tyre dog monitor, AJ's sliders, Hema hn6. The to do list is getting shorter.

Now they would have to have a slightly higher towing capacity than 2.5T with that wouldnt they?

Not true. It's about the same size as it's based on much of the current chassis and drivetrain. Expect updated versions of the current engine. If it ain't broke.... Think along the lines of prado d4d in Hilux, prado to gain upgrades engine.

Toyota confirmed a long time ago and recently (when the 2015 Tacoma went on sale) that they are not related in anyway and so not to get excited buy what the US is doing.

Hope this link work's. Have a look for yourself. I was told by a Toyota tech that the new lux will have a V8 diesel. I was the same and didn't believe him, until I found this.

bit off the topic 70 series.
we had a Fortuner lent to us last time we were in the Philippines.
had around 15k on the clock.
lasting impression was it is a very capable 4wd as it stands.
We did some very muddy tracks and beaches, it had muddies fitted but other than that not much else.
I reckon it will sell here.

Fortuner really would give the mux and craptiva 7 a good run, and push the pathy almost completely out of the picture.

An Ancap5 70 cruiser would be awesome, give the mines a decent vehicle option again, rather than the disposable (in their use) ranger.

No mention of v8 in there, but a 2.8L cummins based unit which is 4 cylinder and already in use by the Chinese Utes.

I call BS in that bit because car salesman/grease monkeys don't even know the specs of the cars they sell let alone top secret models not available to anyone outside Toyota.

They've already shown off the Tacoma in the usa. Looks rubbish and nothing like a Hilux.

"The new engine will be in the form of a new diesel engine that will be based on the new Cummins 5 liter V8". I don't know how you missed that. I guess will have to wait and see
