Les Hiddens meets Ray Mears !

If you are a fan of The Bush Tucker Man or Ray Mears, check this link out. They met up with each other a few years back in Arnhem Land. Listen closely to the conversation when they are travelling together in the 4WD, discussing "What's the worst thing you have ever eaten"

Maybe I am warped, but I reckon this is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS :P

          I SURVIVED !!

I apologise to the 4WD purists here but yesterday I took the "Bush Tucker Man" challenge and left the Prado in the garage for a change

I loaded up my "Blackwolf" 90L backpack and headed up to Mount Canobolas with only what I could carry and my dog by my side :P

Although it was certainly not the most comfortable trip I have ever taken I am proud to say I survived overnight on top of Mount Canobolas in July (it snows up there you know!)

For those interested, all I took was a 90L Blackwolf "Cedar Breaks" backpack, Blackwolf "Samurai" -10 rated sleeping bag (highly recommended), one tarpaulin (wish I had taken 2) and a body bag (I put the sleeping bag inside the body bag but this is no good cause the body bag does not breath and condensation develops - may have to buy a trek tent or improve on this somehow?)

For food I took some frozen snags, a few peas and potatoes in alfoil. I took a set of army mess tins and cutlery set (from my scout days) and a small gas burner.

I also took a Garmin eTrex handheld GPS, digital camera, mobile phone, first aid kit which included matches and a few firelighters.

Most importantly, I bought myself an $8.00 tomehawk from Bunnings yesterday and this proved invaluable. This piece of advice is absolutely true.....Even wet timber will burn well if you split it first. A knife and tomehawk or small axe to fit in your backpack is essential.

For water, all I had was an army style canteen. I filled this with water from a nearby stream and boilt it before consumption (in my first aid kit I also have water sterilising tablets but the water looked and smelt fine so I only boilt it for a bit).

I only trekked through the scrub for about 1.5 hours but this was enough to test out my pack and realise that you need to be reasonably conditioned to do this! I then spent about 2 hours erecting my makeshift shelter, finding and purifying water, and collecting/chopping firewood.

Anyway, I am back home in warm clothes, and sipping on espresso coffee as I write this

Although I enjoyed the challenge and know I can survive 24 hours in an alpine environment I think I will take my beloved Prado next time :P :P

          Here's a few pics....

Good on ya mate, dont you love civilisation when you have braved the elements for 24+ hrs!!

When i was younger i used to do a lot of over night and longer walks through tassie, vic and the flinders etc, great memories and it gets you to amazing places not even the Prado can

                Thanks Fellas,
Lofty you are spot on - you really appreciate all the little luxuries you can just throw in the Prado.

I had 2 tea bags for the trip and I don't usually drink tea! No coffee, no milk, no sugar, etc. Just the absoulte mimimal but I am pleased I did it :P

Didn't sleep too well though. Got a sore neck and shoulders tonight

That clip is a cracker - I choked on my drink with laughter when it showed them going around the bend in the daintree and the camera panned back to the nissan ??? twin cab that looked to be totally abandoned following a stack into a tree. Les and the other bloke didn't even think about stopping for a look.
