  • Shift gear lock problem

Does anyone have experienced having their shift gear locked without pressing the "shift-lock" button? I have a 120 2006 Petrol and I occasionally experience it. The shift gear lock releases if a press the shift-lock on and off. In some worst cases, I have to turn-off my engine and turn it on again before I can shift to drive. This is so annoying.

    Foot on brake?
    Bad brake light switch?
    Bad gear lock solenoid?

My foot is on the brake when I shift my gear from P to D. But in a few occasions the gear seem locked on P. I usually try to press the Shift-lock or turn my engine off and restart again.

I am planning to have this checked by a mech but would be best to know a little background what is going on with it.

Instead of restarting try taking your foot off the brake pedal and then putting it back on, do it a couple of times if it keeps failing. Most likely one of the two things that Piggy suggests and if I had to guess I would say the brake light switch on the brake pedal, hence the test.

Yesterday had to pull up to answer phone in a hurry and when I tried to engage gear (auto) it was locked.
Phoned RACQ and he got in and enabled it by foot on brake and using shift lock.

He then got me to get in and just apply foot brake.
There was no brake light , so he tried to fix but no luck and said I needed a new Brake Light switch.

Since then I have had to use the shift lock and brake method but several times it has worked normally.

Will book into mechanic later in week

I would book in ASAP, as you have no brake lights. Someone runs up your backside and guess who is at fault. Short of that buy one from toyota spare parts and fit it yourself, shouldn't take too long. Either way don't drive it on the road without someone who knows about the problem following you.

              Understood well and truly.
After posting above checked to see if brake light was working and all good.
So it appears that if manual engagement is not necessary brake light will work.

Also got to thinking with all the rain around at the moment could this have an affect on brake light?

Hi, You have blown a fuse, I cannot remember which one, but google toyota shift-lock. Mine blew when I connected the caravan adaptor and it was wired incorrectly and caused it to earth. Simple 50 cent fuse

I found this on another forum: Had the same problem today after towing my boat to the river, all abs skid control lights came on, could not get gearshift out of park.
Phoned the workshop manager at Toyota, he said to check brake light fuse no 5, replaced fuse and all was well, fuse blown when boat was connected.
