  • Oztent security

    Hi all,

I am wondering what other people use to secure there Oztent to the roof? I currently use ratchet straps and a Pioneer platform but when I leave the car for long periods of time to go bushwalking/ explore the sights, I always worry about sticky fingers as it would only take 30 seconds or so for someone to steel the Oztent. I have seen some posts about Ozpods but as far I can see, they don't sell these anymore. Anyone have a good solution for this problem?

    Thanks :-)

I'm using SPT lockable tiedowns. They have 2 x 3mm steel cables running through them. Won't stop bolt cutters, but better than a standard ratchet strap

Great suggestion, thanks. Think I will also chuck one of these over the rhino luggage bag and I will be a happy man when I leave the car.

We use these for the kayaks. Couples of points to note, key is flimsy so don't force it and when you pull the straps tight you can make it easier to lock and unlock by pushing on the locking piece. That way you don't need to put lots of pressure on the key. Hard to imagine from my description but it will make sense when you get them. Good product.

Good point. I've found that out too. They were also cheaper at my local surf shop than they were on eBay.

This is the other method I've seen using at chain and padlocks: http://blog.snowys.com.au/how-to-tra...ztent-rv-tent/

I like to carry a full time security guard with me. People don't steal things when there's an armed guard on the scene.

But seriously, those tie downs look like a genius idea - my only thought, can you get them tight enough to prevent movement. I use a couple of ratchet straps to hold the chainsaw and etc on the roof and its a pain to make sure its all tight enough to stop things moving as I drive.

You can get these straps tight enough to stop movement on a plastic kayak so I would think no problems. I wouldn't use them on my fibreglass kayaks because you can get too much leverage and could damage the glass. Even if you used other straps to take the load and one of these for security. Alternative is to invest in a trunk monkey which I believe mlc uses.

You can get them pretty tight & the friction on them is pretty good. When mine are done up the ends of the oztent bag balloon out (if that makes sense?), and the carry handles sit between the two straps and add something to the diameter, all of which makes it harder to slip through. You'd have to work pretty hard at it to get them off, which is enough of a deterrent to stop the opportunistic ones in more public locations.

They probably wouldn't deter a determined thief with lots of time in a remote location (especially one with bolt cutters) but they are better than a ratchet strap which could be cut in seconds.

http://www.bunnings.com.au/master-lock-1-8m-x-10mm-python-adjustable-locking-cable_p3961515 are probably a good enough deterrent... Can pull them as tight as you like. I used to secure thousands of dollars worth of ladders on the work ute with these. Never had one stolen.
