  • cordless impact wrench. which one do you have?

hey guys, been thinking about buying one for a while to make my life easier when rotating tyres, and as I need to buy some more tools to be able to do more stuff to my car myself.
just saw this one by AEG.
    http://www.bunnings.com.au/aeg-18v-c...-only_p6230182

which would work for me as I already have this pack from them.
    http://www.bunnings.com.au/aeg-18v-p...o-kit_p6230174

also while we are here, what other tools will I need to start doing some minor servicing myself?
already have a fair selection of spanners and sockets, hammer etc.
I know I need a grease gun so I can grease my nipples and an oil pan to catch the mess...
what about a torque wrench? certainly don't want to over tighten the sump plug.
anything else a noobie might need? hook me up.
    Cheers
    Blake

The only concern I would have with that style of impact gun is that I dont think there is an ability to adjust the torque settings on it. With 360Nm on tap things could get very tight very quick. I was looking at something similar a few months back but was unsure due to that reason.

I honestly cannot understand why anyone would want/need one of these. Tightening you should be using a torque wrench not an impact gun and a 600mm breaker bar makes loosening easy for the most "strength challenged".

I use this extendable wheel wrench to loosen the nuts on all 5 wheel (it is kept in the car as it is much easier to use than the factory wheel wrench)
        http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/onl...ecommendations

Then use a cordless impact wrench to spin the nuts off. Swap the tyres and use the impact wrench to spin the nuts on.

Then use a torque wrench to finish off after all 5 wheels have been rotated.

The wheel nuts require a deep impact socket (21mm) to get full engagement.

Hence my questions. I'd rather ask first before I break stuff. I understand torque wrenches come in various sizes but that's all I know about them. Tell me more.

If you just tighten the wheel nuts by hand there is a high likelihood you will stretch or snap the wheel nuts. The spec for Prado wheel nuts is 113Nm which when you first "feel" how tight this is will seem quite low. Hence the need for a torque wrench. It's a fair bet that anyone tightening Prado wheel nuts without a torque wrench will over tighten them.
There are a number of different types of torque wrenches ranging from the simplest that just show deflection on a graduated scale to digital. The most common are those that have an adjustable range and when the select torque is reached they click. The cost of torque wrenches varies greatly and will usually reflect the quality and level of precision/calibration. Torque wrenches come with various range settings and to cover all ranges you would need to buy a number of torque wrenches. But if you looking at just one for working on the Prado I'd suggest one with a range of 40-200Nm or there abouts.

                Here's a link to one I have: https://www.alltools.com.au/shop/ind..._Wrench_1/2%5C
There are certainly cheaper options but I buy tools with the view to keeping them for a very long time.

I have had a Milwaukee one for a few years now and it has had a lot of use. As far as wheels go, I use it to undo the nuts but when putting them back on I always start threads by hand, nip up with the gun to seat the rim and then hand tighten with a torque wrench. They are actually quite easy to use and I've only done one stupid thing where I had it still in tighten mode while wanting to undo a wheel nut and snapped a wheel stud. My mistake and I should have been watching what I was doing rather than talking to a mate at the time.

If you are really worried about over tightening, you can use a torque stick, I have a few of these and they work particularly well. http://www.torquestick.com/

I do a fair bit of work on mine and mates cars and it is so handy it's not funny.

                      Hi
In our tyre shop we just use supercheap ones and replace when they start to over torque, last 12 to 18 months and checked on a calibrated nut two or three times a year.
On the torque sticks gave them away years ago, to unreliable.
I have a high end 1/2inch wrench that is used for specialist jobs only, eg head bolts.
                      Cheers

                        I have a Makita ....

very good for removing drain plugs (gearbox, transfer case difs etc) that are otherwise a bit too easy to slip off and round off as the nut is quite shallow.
I re-install only by hand though.
The mid torque setting is enough to loosen most drain plugs. and the 18v battery lasts well.

I also have a makita and mainly use it to undo the nuts. I tighten them the final bit by hand.

I use a HILTI 1/2 inch cordless rattle gun. Rattles off a fully torqued nut (110-125nm) rattles back up to 100-120 depending how long you leave it going!
Been using it for years on the race team, would undo thousands of nuts a year.
