  • Tyres for 120 Prado - Just after some advice

    Hi Guys,

Been doing some reading on tyres on past threads but still want to see what you guys think.

First of all I am currently running Pirelli Scorpion tyres. I like how they are quite, they handle the wet good and on dirt tracks, I haven't had a problem.

I use my car mainly suburban, but starting to do more tracks, a lot of camping and eventually want to hit the sand dunes. It is not a daily driver, but do use it every weekend.

SO from the above, I was leaning towards an ALL Terrain tyre. What do you guys think? First time buying tyres for a 4B.

So from the brands, I guess everyone has their own opinion, but keen to hear people's experience. I personally want something quite and tuff looking. EG the Mickey Ts Baja ATZ P3 look good so far!

Look forward to some replies, thanks!

Forgot to mention, the brands I am looking at are:
    Mickey Thompson
    Bridgestone
    BF Goodrich

      Turbo,

I have been running the Cooper AT3's and would not be getting them again. Main reason is slipped in wet condition after about 30,000 kms.
I am looking at changing to the Micky T ATZ P3 and have only heard positive about them so far.
The others I am interested in is the new BF Goodrich AT KO2. Good reviews from state side. I use to run the KO in Canada and they were great in the all conditions, even the snow on the way to Whistler and the Rockies. Don't think they are quite available in Oz just yet?

I'd get ones in Light Truck (LT) construction. They have thicker sidewalls - better load carrying, less comfort, more resilience.

I used to have Pirelli Scorpion ATR's on my 60 series Landcruiser. Did 'The Lap' in them from brand new. Never had a puncture on the Gibb River and performed great on Fraser. They looked almost new when we got back, but it was mostly bitumen touring. They are an AT tyre suited to about 80% road/20% road, off road. Great in the sand.

I've got Cooper AT/3 on at the moment (they came with the car). I've never had an issue with them and peformed well in the High Country in the dry and on Fraser and a few local tracks. I don't find them bad in the wet. Though the last couple of days I've noticed the front slightly loose on the bend near my house. You enter the bend on the flat and drops away 90 degrees to the right. They've got about 30-40% tread left, so its understandable with the amount of rain we've been having! Like you I'm mostly suburban driver so they suit me well. They're slightly more aggressive tread than the Pirelli ATR's.

That said I'll probably be going to BFG next time. No real reason really - thought I'd give them a try, and I believe are slightly easier to get hold of outback? Others may care to comment.

No experience of the others but I've heard good things. Realistically the major tire brands are all fairly similar. Stick with them and you'll be right.

I have the Bridgestone Dueler 697s on my 150 and so far as an all terrain, they've been pretty good. I have had a sidewall puncture, but that was probably me more than the tyre...
I did a bit of research into this before committing, and the price of the Duelers made it an attractive proposition.
Would I get them again - that depends, if I continue doing what I'm doing now, yeah. But I would like a slightly more aggressive tyre next time, so I'm thinking about the Cooper ST-Maxx (maybe)

HERE'S a snapshot of all the A/T Options (ignore the fact that its from a Pajero Forum - its actually helpful)

Also, HERE is my research from early last year.

I am on my second set of ATR's and continue to be impressed where they will go and how many Ks they get. Mud is however, not their strong point. :-)
But if you really want a "tough looking" tyre then go with the big block treads.. just be prepared for ordinary performance on the tar... especially when wet.
My choice of the big block treads would be the MT Baja Radial MTZ , but I would want them on a spare set of wheels....

I have been running Mickey Thompson ATZ 4Rib (no longer available) for 65,000 km. They perform exceptionally well on and off road and would have at least another 40,000k's left. Noise level is acceptable and much much quieter that the Cooper ST Mxx (a friend and fellow PP runs them on his 150).

Having driven the 150 with the Coopers, I'm steering away from them (and only from a noise perspective as they perform well on and off road from what ive seen) and look at the Mickey Thompson ATZ P3.

I can only pass on my thoughts on the tyres I have experienced and you may well find an equivalent tyre that's better value for money.

ATRs as in the Pirellis? So many tyres with similar names, start to lose track!

From memory the Pirelli's are good value and whilst designed for mostly road use these tyres go reasonably well offroad as you know. Mickey Thompsons/Coopers etc right up there in the costly bracket being from the US. BFG A/T's well priced, though they suffer from weaker sidewall and hardening if you are a very modest driver and keep these tyres for a few years. Don't discount looking at the Nitto and Toyo brand A/T's - better quality than the BFG and have also a good reputation. Wrangler Duratrac also a nice entry level tyre into the A/T range.

I'll throw another spanner in the works for you to think about depending on what traction options you have in your vehicle at present ... get the Pirelli's from Jax or whoever at bargain basement and use the saved dollars to put towards a rear Eaton electric locker ... not cheap, but that piece of hardware alone improves your offroad ability without any compromise for the time spent onroad. My vehicle (not a prado) had Michellin A/T's for years till they stopped making them in my size... with lockers it went everywhere irrespective of the treads I ran.

AT's are definitely the go for you, any of the brands you mentioned would be fine.

I am a BFG man, on my third set now and hanging out for the new version to be released so I can get a set of them.

                        Cheers Andrew

Ditto. BFGs for me. On my 2nd set on the Prado and had 2 sets on an 80 Series before that. They have been all over the country on all sorts of track with no problems. Good in the wet and quiet as well. They hold their balance well. 2 punctures in 200,000+ km - one a horse nail and one me being careless around some sharp steel.
