  • Struggling to decide

My 90 series has recently ticked over 300k and I'm doing about 400km/week to work and back, so the time has come to think about another car. I'll be keeping the 90 as the camping and beach car though. I've considered other makes (diesel Merc's, 3/5 series Beemers, BT50/Ranger, Toureg, Amarok, etc), but keep coming back to Toyota. I would prefer to spend around $40k, but will go more for the right vehicle e.g. a low mileage HDJ100R. Other options are a late model Petrol 150, or and early model diesel 150. Or maybe a late model petrol Hilux... I seem to settle on a different choice every 2nd evening. I don't want to take the hit on a brand new car, so looking at used. I am after a high vantage point which most 4x4s give. It might go off road occasionally, but not often as we will still have the 90. A ute might be handy, but isn't absolutely necessary. Fuel consumption can't be ridiculous though (which rules out a petrol 200). This is doing my head in.

I saw a 2010 GXL, Auto, TD, with 80,000kms located on the Gold Coast for around $40k on Facebook today.

I think it was on the Aussie 4WD Prado 150 page.

I like the BT50's. Hated the look of them to begin with but they've grown on me after a couple of years. They look great when kitted out.

First question is do you need two 4wds? If yes I would suggest a petrol 150. Utes are great but a real compromise for ride and interior to get that carrying space out the back. The 150 has a few compromises too but is still the pick at the moment in my view. Given your budget keep clear of diesels unless you know the history and can interrogate it yourself. We have two 4wd Utes that my sons drive and the 150 as well as my car and the daily driver of #1. The dual cab is good for day trips taking the bikes or kayaks but usually it is the 150 that does the duty. So much so that I will be looking to go smaller when my car is up for replacement, just have to find something that can match its 4 second sprint! Oh and the P ute? It's just a bush pig. Well set up and capable but still a bush pig.

The petrol is bullet proof and while it doesn't suit my driving style or right foot they are fantastic value for money a couple of years on.

For me, if I had a weekend off road car, I would get the cheapest car to run as the daily commute. It could even be a $10k hatchback that sips fuel.

It doesn't look like you need a 4WD so a pretend one might do if you want the high driving position. Say a RAV4?

Go for a Skoda Yeti Outdoor 103TDI with the added on 4x4 option pacs. Someone (very possible) may be able to space out the suspension and all for <=40K.

Kia Rio brand new from the dealer, sips fuel and has a 7yr warranty. Do you really need 2 4wd or just want a 2nd?

My 95 TD has over 360k on the clock, i am not looking at getting rid of it until over 550-600k. The iKZ motors are good for that king of km as long as you keep the services up. Why not spend some of the $ on some upgrades and enjoy the 95 TD and save the rest for trips or play money?

Maybe just keep thinking if its not a desperately needed purchase. I have been going back and forth for nearly 2 years since I sold my Hilux and bought a snot box Rodeo. None of the vehicles that I was thinking about really ticked all the boxes for me, then like a bolt from the blue, 70 series cruiser ute jumped into my head, and that's what I got.

Not suggesting you should get a 70, but if like me its doing your head in, maybe you need to keep thinking until the right answer jumps out at you.

                  Cheers Andrew

I've always been a meat and potatoes man, keep it simple, the more electrics the more can wrong and more it can hit he hip pocket
If your covered by warranty then that's not an issue, personally I would refurbish the 90, to bring it upto spec, and bang for buck wise look at something new 25k drive away, good on fuel and easy live with, I would look at a Kia, good warranty, excellent with warranty claims!! Best of both worlds, my 2 cents...

This morning I took a late model diesel Pajero Exceed for a test drive. It had all the bells and whistles, but as much as I wanted to like it, it just didn't float my boat and I crossed Pajeros off my list.
Then we took a petrol 150 GXL for a drive and what a difference. The Prado is soooo smooooth, and surprisingly spacious inside. Did I mention how smoooooth the gear changes are? Very!
We also took a late model diesel Hilux SR5 for a drive, and while I could live with one, the Prado is so much nicer to drive and I don't really NEED a ute. So I've put a deposit on a 2011 petrol Prado to keep my diesel 90 company. For the first couple of years the 90 will still be my offroad/camping/beach car, and the 150 will do everything else.

                          Toyota Prado all the way!!!
As for the Pajero thing, well "Pajero" loosely translates to wanker in English and you know we ain't got time for that.
Wish you a many happy carefree k's out of your new rig

I seem to recall saying the same thing when i bought the 150 but.....the 150 tows so much better it is slowly taking over all duties. The last 2 trips we actually took both cars so the kids can go 4wding too. Once i get my lift kit in i suspect 90 might be semi retired.
