  • Winch decision

Im in the market for a winch...

    Price aside, my options are

    1. Warn Tabour 12,000 winch including a steel cable for about $1200
    2. Runva 11xp winch including a rope cable for about $850

Which one would you guys get? Its going on a Prado 150 with an ironman delux winch bar.

That's way too much for the 11xp. Having said that, rope is better.

I'll be going with the 11XP. $650 is about average price and the vast majority of reviews read well.

When I winch I will be getting the 11XP. Great value for money. Drift is around the right money.

I believe the Runva is waterproof, to what level Im not sure though. Warn will not necessarily cover water ingress as thats not covered in there warranty. (The Warn Zeon range is IP68 but 3x the $$ of a Runva) Of your selections I'd go the Runva!

From a warn owner go with the runva. Warn winches are great, but the value is in other brands and the tabor is just their cheep winch, nothing special about it.

I have the Runva EWX12000. (same speed as 11xp)
love the winch its great. not had an issue. However having my time over I would go the 9500-Q
I look at it this way.

every single time I use the winch I would benefit from the faster speed.
almost never will I use the extra 2500lb (1.1 tonne)

and if winch power is the issue, setup a double line pull (winch block) to effectively double your pulling power.

I recently purchased a Runva 11xp and installed it myself. But I have been unable to attach the hook to the rope because the fittings supplied offer no way of securing the pin to the round nut provided, since the pin is unthreaded. The pin just falls out very easily. Are there any easy solutions to this?

Go the lighter winch so as not to bend the ironman bar.

Do they not supply a cotter pin (think that's the correct term) that goes through the shaft of the pin to secure it? On mine (different brand) you just spread the teeth on the cotter pin out once it's through the shaft and that locks the cotter pin in place. You can see the pin to the left of the hook in the first pic here :- http://www.runvawinch.com.au/winches/4wd-electric/11xp/

It's nothing like that fido666. It just a straight piece of 1/4 inch steel rod with no way to hold it into the hook to stop it slipping out - other than sticky tape. I'm seeking advice from the vendor and Runva agent, but it's hard getting a response.... still waiting.

Post up pics. Normally the pin has an area that expands into a recess in the hook. Look at the hole in the hook.

Hi alanm , my runva came with a split or cotter pin to prevent the shaft from slipping out
                          .
                          Cheers Matt

I have heard back from the vendor, and he has a solution which looks promising:
"The pin needs to be hit in with a hammer. It will only go in from one side of the silver sleeve (the side with the larger opening). 10 second job To remove the pin, it's the opposite (hammer it out with a punch). "

You can see these parts in the picture - the rod and the round receiving 'nut' or 'sleeve'

                              Thanks for your advices
