  • Tigerz11 Grande winch won't freespool

I have a Tigerz11 Grande 12,000lb winch installed on the Prado which has been on for a couple of years now. It's never been used in anger but winch rope has been removed and re-spooled at one stage to fit my DIY winch saver (one end of a boat roller). The other day I noticed the winch hook was hanging a bit slack so in the process of re-tensioning it I tried to unspool some rope with the clutch handle in the free-spool position. I could not budge it try as I might so in the end I un-spooled it using the motor then re-spooled it the same way.

I have been able to free spool it in the past but admit I have not run it for a while. What is likely to be wrong?

lack of use. Try winching out with the freespool disengaged. The clutch may be tight and if it releases use the motor and pull the cable to free it up. If this doesn't work you may have to remove the gear box and regrease. Use moly grease or similar.

OK thanks will have a go over the weekend. It was a job and a half getting the thing installed in the first place, I don't relish the idea of having to remove it but at least I know it can be done without removing the bar (TJM T13).

Had a similar issue with my Magnum winch sometime back. I removed the gearbox and there was a lot of corrosion and hard caked grease due to water ingress. It all cleaned up well and free spools well but replaced it with a Runva with rope which I'm very much happier with

If i haven't been out to use it, I winch the length of rope out and back every month or so. Only takes 10 mins and I know all is functioning.

Had a quick play with it this afternoon and it freespooled first go LOL. It seems to be sorted with the bit of winching out and in under power that I tried on Friday. I still need to unwind it all and give the rope a wash in a bucket of soapy water as there seems to be quite a bit of dirt on the rope.
