  • My 98 prado is stuck in HL

My truck is a manual 98 Prado and it's stuck in high lock. The gear stick won't move to any other 4wd gear at all.
I've seen the thread about running different size wheels front and back can cause this but I'm running new 31' mud grips all round.
Can't figure out what the problem is and I was hoping to get some info before I go out and spend money on fixing it

Have you tried jacking either the front or rear of the car up to remove any binding in the drivetrain. If not do that and see how you go.

We have this happen from time to time. Usually driving backwards with a wheel in the gravel while I pull with everything I've got let will get it out. Mind you, I was stuck for about a week once haha

Jack it up and take some weight off the driveline. Leave it overnight if you can.

That's a common issue and costs nothing to repair, just some labour. I believe it's related to the 4wd gear lever and it's guiding wire. Access the transfer from above (interior), remove the 4wd gear stick and re-install it with the tension wire in correct position. It may take several attempts to do as the gear stick must be reinserted at the correct angle according to the current gear selection (and the 2 sliding mechanisms below).

You will be dealing with 4 major parts in there: the lever, a tension wire, and 2 sliding mechanisms which control transfer mode (one controls lock, the other controls high/neutral/low).
