  • Tyre Tread Widths

Over the years, I've learnt that not all tyres are created equal. Despite the numbers written on the sidewall being the same, the values of the different parameters vary from pattern to pattern. For example, tyre diameters and tread width don't really have a correlation to the sidewall markings.

So for this thread, I'm making a list of tyre tread widths. This is a measurement of the tread part of the tyre that contacts the ground, as opposed to the overall width of the tyre.

So post below what you've got and I'll try to maintain the list.

          Nice thread mr.
You are onto it, most tyre places I speak to dont realise the "section width" is not the " tread width".

You can gather the data, http://www.tirerack.com/content/tire.../homepage.html
On tire rack website you can select size & makes/models & compare including all their specs.

                      A couple to add

                      265/70/17
Toyo Open Country AT II 215mm

                      245/70/17
                      Yokohama Geolandar A/T-s 197mm
                      Dunlop AT20 Grand Trek 195mm

Interesting that the toyo at2s are 10mm wider in the 65 profile than the 70

Sorry the 255 measurements were a little bit out - updated on my previous post.

Interesting to see some of the 285 and 265's are very close in width to the 255's!

I was surprised how (relatively) narrow the 285s were.

The tyre numbers refer to section width as mentioned above not tread width , it is the width measued at a specific section of the tyre on a specific rim (dont ask me what sort of rim)

Thank you all for the info. I have also created an excel spreadsheet with funky colours and bars that vary in length depending on the width recorded. Feel free to play with it. It's in the first post.

A pattern seems to be emerging in that MT tyres are narrower than AT tyres. In terms of offroad performance, given the same overall diameter, a narrower tyre will give you better offroad traction when driving over uneven ground (think tank tracks). This is because a narrower tyre will have a longer footprint. I don't know how much better it will be but it's something to mull over next time you're at the camp fire and discussing/comparing the day's run with your fellow companions.
