  • 120 v 150

I am considering updating from a 2006 VX petrol with 145Km to a 150 GXL TD auto. I know and have read all of the costs and benefits of petrol v diesel. My problem is that having driven a few [overpriced] low km 150 s I am underwhelmed to say the least. The diesel goes ok and around town appears to be as quick as the old car. However they are so much noisier up to cruising speed and seem very agricultural. From 80 km on they have similar noise levels to the V6. The doors close with a clang rather than a thud like the 120 and the whole structure does not seem as tight as my totally rattle free and squeak free car which has done a lot of outback travel. Has this been the experience of those who have gone from petrol 120s to diesel 150s? Do you ever get used to the crappy layout of the rear seats? IF I do update I think it will to a petrol [I am looking at sub $50k cars].
That said for those who have gone from petrol 120s to petrol 150s, are they: any more economical in the real world?; do they go harder? do they still have that delicious off idle smooth torque especially when towing and or in slow off road conditions.
By the way, on a recent 14000 km trip towing off road campers my V6 averaged about 20l/100 km and a 150 D4D about 14-14l/100km. This included about 4000 km of dirt [28psi tyres] lots of bloody headwinds and both had roof racks with a spare tyre and maxtracks on top to upset the airflow. I was quite happy with this. Thanks. Neil

I have a 150 SX which is the 3 door version of the 150GXL with diesel and automatic.

I have done a couple of trips towing a camper trailer through the flinders Ranges, Arkaroola, Oodnadatta track, Dalhousie, Finke, West MacDonald ranges, Litchfield, Katherine, Darwin and Kakadu.

We managed without a roof rack.

With three adults in the car we averaged a bit over 10 lt/100km and found it quiet, comfortable and relaxing for the driver and passengers.

Other than a dual battery and air bags to help the rear springs it is quite standard including the tyres. We also managed to do all that quite safely with the standard 85 litre fuel tank.

It doesn't rattle and the doors definitely don't clang.

I would never consider it agricultural especially comparing to the Patrols and Landcruiser I owned before the Prado.

It sounds like you have made up your mind and you are looking for confirmation. Sorry I can't help.

    S
155 SX with dual battery and Polyairs in the rear springs..

Depends what you want your vehicle for but for offroad & touring...

      120 series good points:

      1. Looks better
      2. Carries more fuel
      3. More economical due to aerodynamics & lighter same engine power & torque
      4. Which means its faster as well
      5. Plastic flares look cool, they save costly panel damage when you rub.
      6. narrower vehicle = better centre of balance.
      7. The wheels look much better.
      8. Narrower vehicle fits between trees easier.
      9. Cheaper than the 150, put lockers in with 10% of the change & kick the 150's ass.
      10. No big bulky dashboard.
      11. No nasty $3000-5000 master cyl to worry about shagging out.
      12. No brakes working violently against the driveline creating pressure & wear.
      13. You don't have to spend $10k+ to help it look better.
      14. Heaps more room in the back of a gxl & seats are easily removed & refitted.
      15. The plastic on the lower of all doors protecting the beast from dints & panel damage out bush.
      16. No actuator hanging off transfer to get broken. ( in most cases gx & gxl incl)

      150 series good points:

      1. Traction control is good.
      2. Triptronic shift rules!
      3. Trip computer showing fuel economy is handy.
      4. Maybe a bit quieter & comfy as its newer.
      5. Front mount intercooler is always better IMO.
      6. Bonnet opens properly.

Hate to be a hater, but as someone who has blown a D4D, my advice is buy a petrol.

120 or 150 buy what you like its a great platform - just give the D4D a miss.

My current car is a VX so it has all of the electronic goodies like traction control, stability control etc. The fact that it is so good makes it hard to part with but there does come a time to update while the present car still has a used value so the changeover is not too great.

Agree with most of you opinion on the 120 series.

            now to the 150 series.
the trip computer is a waste of space
It provides no better comfort than the 120
The plastics used on the interior are far inferior to the 120
That Bl##dy rear dust collector and wiper assembly can go
Can I have a real low range gear stick please.
Where did all that space go in the rear? and the floor is so flimsy.
I agree with the intercooler and the bonnet

Sorry to hear that Pinko blew a D4D, my experience has only been positive. 300,000 km in the 120 series and 70,000 in 12 months in the 150.
The 150 series is marginally better on fuel (but the computer is way off)

For my money. I'd be finding a good D4D 120 series and sticking with it.

I have a 120 and my wife is talking about upgrading to the 150. For me to get a 150 with the mods I have on the 120 would cost about 70-80k less trade in. Don't really see any point in doing that. I could do a rebuild on motor get it resprayed and all the extra mods I wanted and still have change. I think Ill keep my 120

Just think if it has a heart attack, aka pops its cherry, 9k + fitting for a new heart (d4d) with injectors
Much cheaper than a 150. Don't downgrade, ohhps I mean upgrade

I went from a 2006 120 petrol to a 2013 150 diesel. I'm impressed with the diesel and its economy. I'm not concerned about the injector issue (read almost every threat on here before upgrading) ... the learning's on here teach you to how to maintain. There's no rattles or squeaks, and the doors do not clang. The best way I can describe the ride when on a nice road is that it feels like a being in a limo that's riding on air. I do find the steering is very heavy and lacks road feel.

Thanks chaps. What about real world economy, slow off road torque and towing of the 150 V6 v. the 120 V6?

The diesel is much better on fuel than the v6, or we would have the v6.
Offroad they use double as much fuel.
Towing you can get not a bad run, depends on your driving style.
Cold start short trips the diesel is much better.
Basically the only time the v6 gets good economy is on the highway & be nice to it.

150VX V6 owner here, towed a 1500kg CT around Australia. Averaged around 19L/100 (with car roof bag and all other types of stuff). Aerodynamically it was like a brick on wheels. Towed well, very comfortable and has done plenty of low-range work with and without CT with no problems.
