I am considering updating from a 2006 VX petrol with 145Km to a 150 GXL TD auto. I know and have read all of the costs and benefits of petrol v diesel. My problem is that having driven a few [overpriced] low km 150 s I am underwhelmed to say the least. The diesel goes ok and around town appears to be as quick as the old car. However they are so much noisier up to cruising speed and seem very agricultural. From 80 km on they have similar noise levels to the V6. The doors close with a clang rather than a thud like the 120 and the whole structure does not seem as tight as my totally rattle free and squeak free car which has done a lot of outback travel. Has this been the experience of those who have gone from petrol 120s to diesel 150s? Do you ever get used to the crappy layout of the rear seats? IF I do update I think it will to a petrol [I am looking at sub $50k cars].
That said for those who have gone from petrol 120s to petrol 150s, are they: any more economical in the real world?; do they go harder? do they still have that delicious off idle smooth torque especially when towing and or in slow off road conditions.
By the way, on a recent 14000 km trip towing off road campers my V6 averaged about 20l/100 km and a 150 D4D about 14-14l/100km. This included about 4000 km of dirt [28psi tyres] lots of bloody headwinds and both had roof racks with a spare tyre and maxtracks on top to upset the airflow. I was quite happy with this. Thanks. Neil
