  • Trusted workshop on melbourne (hopefully eastern suburbs)

hello everybody am david, i just bought a prado jz95r very nice and clean, (am new in australia, i used to be aware about prices and workshops back in home but now, here, i fell like an old lady trusting in a mechanic) so to get my roadworthy certificate i take the car to a workshop and they are asking for

replace front lower control arm bush kit x2 = 425$
replace rocker cover gasket kit x2 = 300$
    replace windscreen = 220$
replace timing belt kit = 627$

so basically i want to know if those prices are normal? i think are fking expensive and am burning inside just thinking that somebody is taking advantage from me, moreover, to make more productive the thread, I want to know if any of you guys know a good workshop with decent people around the eastern suburbs in melbourne.

    thanks in advantage guys!

Thanks D4D for the information, anything to say about the prices?

Those prices seem about right to me. Unfortunately the v6 tends to be a little pricy on parts.

I'm guessing that they won't be replacing the water pump when they do the timing belt... shame.

I'll price out the components for you and see if it's any different with you supplying your own parts.

Timing belt kit by Gates $209
          Master Part water pump $119

          Valve cover gaskets $270 pair

Nolathane Lower control arm bushes $200

These are retail prices at Autobarn stores. You can probably get them cheaper, I'm in Bayswater and could probably organize you a bit of a discount (I'm not an employee but a sub contract installer in their workshop)

While those labour prices are not cheap... they aren't ripping you off either unfortunately. The biggest thing that I can see is though, I've done all these things to my car recently and there are a number of other things I'd do at the same time which would push the cost up even further.

I do know a young mechanic who maintains a taxi fleet and does his own work also. Really takes the time to do a job properly and works for a good price, especially if referal based. I can get a labour quote from him if you like... although he is located all the way over in Melton. I'm also curious as to why a timing belt would fail a rwc...

thanks RanJ the timing belt is because the previous owner told me that the prado just got the mileage for it and the timing belt is urgent, so am doing that
