  • Life span of tyres

Hi All, what is the life span of a tyre in time not durability ie, the tyres on my caravan are 13 y/o but have heaps of tread so does the rubber break down over time or no ? Also I'm up for a new set of A/Ts on the Prado any recommendations that aren't too dear ?
    thanks in advance ...................

Yes the rubber deteriorates with time, up to 5 yo I would say is fine, 5-10 years might depend on the tyre and exposure during its life. Over 10yo and your playing with fire IMO.

    Cheers Andrew

Tyres on caravans are recommended to be replaced after 6 years regardless of tread / wear etc.
If the van is a single axle then this is even more important.

This issue has been discussed on 'Caravaners Forum' which like here is very informative on all topics. (http://caravanersforum.com)

Any tyre after 5 years old is suspect , some brands you can say pretty much not if but when
Some brands i used to change over pretty much blew out around the 6 year mark , didn't matter if they were being driven on or not, they still blew out on the spare

If you are only towing the van from 'Nam down to Mandurah then they have heaps of life left in them! Seriously, if they've generally sat idle for the most part then they will no longer be perfectly round and will almost certainly have radial cracks that split at the most inappropriate moment causing you grief, either financial or health wise. Invest in quality LT tyres for the van and your safety will be improved. You won't also get let down out back of beyond when a tyre fails and you can't get a replacement easily.

Yes I agree Dave I'm booked in for newies tomorrow , BTW I put the van on Jacks so no distortion or cracks (kept under cover) but even though they've only done 10000 K's better safe than sorry aye ? just had to be sure that there is a "sell by date" for them, also scored a set of Cooper's for $1368 fitted (265 17's A/T 3) cheapest I've seen them here so far
                  thanks mate....................

I bought a second hand camper, with LT off road tyres that looked like new. Had a blow out on the open road that could have ended quite badly, luckily was able to pull over but still did a lot of damage to the camper. Turns out they were just over 6 years old and had just degraded internally with no outward signs.

Lesson learnt check the age of your tyres, appearance doesn't mean a lot.

We also had the unfortunate experience of a tyre blowout on the caravan. Brought it second hand and didn't even consider the tyres as they had plenty of tread. They were 6 years old and both have now been replaced. Caused quite a bit of damage to the wheel well area and plumbing. Luckily no one hurt. Would never push the 5yr envelope after this experience.
