Welding with batteries

He has done 2 now, the one I am referring to is the stick welding demo.
He used 2 batteries, not 3.
He connected the negative to Earth, which is the wrong way round for DC welding.
He was pushing the stick instead of dragging.
He was barely striking an arc and just putting down a few blobs which would have held absolutely nothing in a real repair.

Ahh, I'm still catching up - I saw the MIG welding one. Looks nice but I'm not sure we go anywhere remote enough to justify the kit. I thought he said it was $1400 or so but it looks like it was this one here for $910

I haven't used a battery powered mig so cant comment on how he set it up and whether that was right or wrong, but his welding was pretty horrible, maybe good enough for a sand flag mount but it made me cringe watching him
Its a lot of money and reasonably size kit, justifying the $$ and space / weight to carry that compared to a stick set up is pretty difficult.
Taking a full size auto darkening helmet is also going a bit overboard I reckon, I only carry the lens, and would fashion my own mask out of what ever I had, or just use the lens on its own for a minor weld.

Hey oscartangotango,
That sounds like a really good way of doing it.
But would need quite long leads to reach the weld site (rear spring hangar for example) Better than taking out all your batteries though... Do you think there would be any dramas with modern cars and fault codes by taking wires off the alternator?

Just thought if you need to weld something on your own car that your using the alternator with, would that cause any issues with the earthing?Cheers Gary

You'll cook the alternator for a start. That is why AJ120 REMOVE'S the batteries from the vehicle.Originally posted by sunchaser View PostJust thought if you need to weld something on your own car that your using the alternator with, would that cause any issues with the earthing?'04 120 Petrol Flinders Red GXL
