  • New Prado and new to 4x4 -advice needed

    Hello all!

I have recently gone a purchased myself a 2008 V6 GXL with 2"lift, snorkel, TJM alloy bull bar, Grabber tyres, UHF towbar, Rhinorack tray, spotties and a LED bar.. and I am looking to have some fun with it :-).. however I am new to this and my only real experience is a 1 day 4x4 training course I did 3 years a go for work... and I am looking for advice on what stuff I may need and places to get good value but not rubbish gear.

I am planning to get the following:
-PP stickers :-) (where do we get these???)
    -Snatch strap(s??)
-shovel - I have mounts for a long handled one, so probably one of those
    -Maxxtracks or similar
    -canopy
    -compressor & tyre guage

and eventually pending permission from the Minister for Finance - winch

Can anyone recommend what brands/etc to get - or not to get - and good places to get them from, or list me anything I am missing out?
Can anyone also recommend me places/groups/clubs in Adelaide where I can get some learning so when I go solo I don't do anything too stupid?
White 2008 GXL V6 Petrol Prado with 2" lift, TJM T-15 Alloy Bar, TJM Snorkel, Sidesteps, Rhinorack Pioneer platform, 2.5x2.5m Awning, 2 HID Spotties, 20" lightbar, 2x rear LED worklights, 1 LED side camp light

Send a PM to #############, pretty sure he still has some.

I got my recovery kit (XTM brand) from Ray's Outdoors, my Maxtrax too. Wait till they have a 20% off sale or Supercheap or BCF do as Ray's will price match (all part of the same group). It's well made and good value.

Shovel, well you can buy long handle ones at any hardware store.

By canopy do you mean awning? Much of a muchness these days unless you want to go for a special style like a foxwing or ostrich wing. Mine came from 4WD SupaCentre, it's a Tigerz11 branded one but quality is as good as a lot of the name brands. I like mind has metal hinges for the swing arms, a lot use plastic.

Compressor, I have a Thumper from 4WD SupaCentre since my cheap eBay one died but have recently purchased an ARB one so I can have it under the bonnet (one less thing to carry in the boot). The Thumper is actually a pretty good performer for the money (around $100 most days) but it is quite bulky.

Tyre gauge, I have an ARB one but plenty of other options around and they all look very similar.

Do you have any recovery points fitted to the Prado? I'm not talking about the factory tie-down points but proper rated recovery points. PP member AMTS has started selling some, not sure if they fit a TJM bar though.

Winches, well there are so many options now. Mine is a Tigerz11 Grande from 4WD SupaCentre. I have not had to use it in anger yet so I can't say how well it performs. Not sure I'd buy one again as I had a lot of issues fitting it due to the cable on the control box being too short, had to send it off to an auto sparky to put longer ones on. I can't see a winch port on your bullbar, check if it's winch compatible even.

I looks like there is a spot to cut it out behind the LED bar - kind of like pre-perforated paper.. I'll take it in to TJM and get them to tell me before I make any decisions there

Why not join a suitable club and get some training and experience and then you can see what sort of equipment you will need.

          S
155 SX with dual battery and Polyairs in the rear springs..
