You guys got me thinking about my rubber so I pulled the old BFG A/Ts on the alloys and put the BFG M/Ts on steel rims back onto the car. The extra tread helps with fuel economy anyway.

From the lack of "you need to change your tyres now", should I assume that there is nothing wrong with the crack in the photo?

Looks pretty minor just wear and tear on the rubber and not structural. Are those straight cuts part of the tyre design?

What kind of damage did it cause?

The ones on top of the tread? Yeah. Cant remember what they are for.

Have seen a bit worse than that, and no problems with mine when like that, still okay until replacement time.

The straight cuts might be to assist with noise suppression on tarred roads, but not 100% sure.

We have a Bridgestone subscriber on this Forum. Fire off a question to them. A tyre fitter some years ago told me it was just part of the wear and tear of off-road tyres.

the straight cuts are called sipes. It increases traction in the wet.

I'd say that you have driven over a very sharp faced rock with a hard tyre.

When we were discussing cracked lugs I was told this was a Cooper thing. That seems way worse than anything i have experienced on my Coopers.

I think if we're honest it happens to all aggressive tyres if they are pushed on hard terrain.

I had cracks on my Cooper S/T Maxx when they were first released, Goodyear tried to tell me that there must have been caused when fitting the tyres to the rim and I said well why is only 2 effected and the other 2 are fine. I was then told to contact Coopers directly, after many phone calls to them and they did not return any to me. Goodyear blamed Coopers and they said it was in the hands of Goodyear, I was just going around in circles. Coopers then told me they would replace the 2 faulty tyres at a cost of $40 each tyre as I had driven 10,000km on them. I refused and said I have already paid for these tyres once and was not going to pay again, unless they could prove the damage was caused by me. Coopers told me than there is nothing they can do. So after 2 weeks of being dicked around by both I gave Coopers and Goodyear until the end of trade that day to have a solution for me or it was going to be handed over to Fair Trading. Well....... that very afternoon about 4pm a different fellow from Coopers contacted me and asked me what the tyre size was and said he'll get back to me, about 5pm he called me back and said that there were going to be 4 brand new tyres delivered to the Goodyear dealer for me to go and get fitted in a few days time. The cracks on my tyres were about 2mm from the rim and ran around parallel to the rim for 50-100mm on 2 tyres. Just don't give up on those big companies they cannot afford or do not want bad publicity. Cheers Dean

Had exactly the same problem by all accounts it is only cosmetic but as I had payed good money I too requested they be replaced. Cooper came through without argument, the rep even made a visit to our house given we are in a rural area I thought that was pretty good. Had 5 new tyres delivered to the local dealer and swapped at no cost.

As far as tyres letting go I think that there will always be that tyre that for some reason in manufacture lets go but I have always run my tread down even on old tyres with no problem whatsoever. Suggest that keeping an eye on them is part of the deal when going off road. If you are going remote on your own then you obviously need to be able to replace even a new tyre that could get damaged so I for one would never swap out a perfectly good tyre just coz it is old.

Thats the sort of thing that happens when you are spinning wheels and the come in contact with something solid with the lug. A lot of strain can be placed on the tyre at point of contact and results more in a tear than a cut. Looks somewhat like that
