hey guys want to pick some brains because mines not workking it out....i have a 2001 5L hilux its got a couple of niggly problems i want to sort out...

    1. fuel guage it use to work (12 months ago) but has gone from working to intermittantly working now it only works when i fill it up but withing 100kms it drops to empty and wont work till i fill it again...

    2. didnt notice it at first (bought it in winter) but the tranny tunnel gets very hot on a long trip down highway (>1 hour) all oils in gearbox and transfer case no problems with gear changes etc

any ideas would be great thanks

Trans tunnel heat is normal, you could try putting a reflective insulator on the underside to keep the heat out, and a layer of sound deadening on the inside would also help.

As to the fuel gauge you need to look at what is causing the problem. Have you checked the sender unit, measured resistance across it to make sure it's working. Then check at the back of the instrument cluster, insure it's not a weird wiring issue. If neither of those two it will be the gauge not working correctly.

No worries, I can't remember exactly, but one of the wires coming out should measure a variable resistance dependant on fuel level. If it doesn't change or is open/short circuited the sender is buggered. Is it a tray back or style side? A tray back is much easier to check this on.
