  • NSW New inspection arrangements

Thought this may be interesting for us new Prado owners in NSW

    New inspection arrangements

From 1 July 2008 the period for vehicle safety inspection exemption for new light vehicles will be extended from three to five years. Most light vehicles, including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, panel vans, caravans, trailers and heavier four-wheel drive vehicles, with a compliance date of July 2003 onwards can be renewed without an inspection report for the first five years. Your renewal notice will indicate if an inspection is required.

From 1 July 2008, e-Safety Check will replace the traditional paper-based scheme (pink slips). All Authorised Inspection Stations will transmit the inspection report to the RTA electronically.

    Cheers

I think this is fair for new vehicles as there is no doubt about there roadworthyness (is that a word?) but the amount of morons I see driving in the dark with no tail lights, or missing a couple of brake lights :x

NSW needs to do more than change the Pink slip situation they need to review the whole greenslip thing.

As far as Pinks go though i do think that there are some small things like JCAS said but there are some larger concerns such as bald tyres that need to be covered. A pink slip in the scheme of rego isn't all that costly to get and considering that most of the items covered are things that save people's lives by being in working order i don't have a problem with 3 years
2006 GXL D4D, Gun Metal Grey, Soverign Bull Bar, Uniden UH400SX-RM CB. Rock slider steps from WASP, 2" Lift Bilsteins with King Springs, Cooper ST Maxx 265/70/17's and a Safari Snorkel. My Wife's future shopping list includes in order a Winch (Most likely a Tigerz), Bash Plates, Rear Bar, Dual Battery setup and a 60l Fridge. And the list gets longer each time we talk about the car.

        My two bob's worth

I personally believe that there are underlying issues with going to five years, for example on the current system of three years my vehicle is going to have covered somewhere around 180K. Now I defy anybody to put forward an argument that a vehicle could be perfectly roadworthy if the owner did not get everything fixed as it occurred.
My Prado was recently re-registered and did not need a pink slip. The windscreen had a large crack from the left hand bottom corner extending upwards and across in front of the drivers eyes - illegal and would not have passed a pink slip but I had to wait three weeks for a screen (NRMA decision) and needed the car so got it registered.

Extending the periods of inspection is asking for trouble, so when money is tight and your Prado needs tyres around rego time, guess what, they will register it with bald tyres with the intent of getting them later because they aren't forced to by means of an inspection. Then the proverbial hits the fan on a wet day and !!!

I think that the inspection process should include a kilometre limit also, say 3 years/75,000km because we are not all honest citizens when there is a loophole and we think we can get away with it for a while.

Oh Jacto, How could you question the honesty of your fellow motorist
For me it works out really well, our car is serviced 6 monthly, whether it needs it or not, and honestly for the sake of a couple of hundred dollars, I don't think I could live with myself if something that I knew of failed and caused an accident that hurt someone, not to mention the safety of my own family.
It's an imperfect world and a balance is so hard to find. Now if only we could get them to adopt the adr's for tyre diameter, we'd be laughing.

In the ACT we don't have to have an annual inspection ever. If the car is ever sold it needs one to transfer. We also have no choice with the green slip so when you pay your rego the green slip is included. The means you can choose 3, 6 or 12 months rego.

But.....they do regular road side checking stations, they pick a nice road, block it off and make everyone drive very slowly past the inspectors, anything that looks out of the ordinary is pulled out for a better look. They can also and do regular checks of carparks for noticable faults. Your then issued on the spot with a defect notice! I got one once for a crack in the window while shopping.

I guess its not a perfect system as cars can get though but it will only be time before they are caught up with!
            2000 GXL. 3.4lt V6, ARB Sahara Bar, IPF's, foglights, 2 inch lift (OME), Cooper ST's 265/75/16
