  • LED light bar rules

    So. I live in perth- the police have made it illegal to have light bar above the bonnet height even on my rhino rack. What are these police thinking!!!Click image for larger version

        Regardless of who is to blame they are thinking of the poor sucker coming the other way over a hill who sees your bright lights coming and drops there lights to low beam whilst you don't see his oncoming lights due to the brightness of your LED light bar and then blind the on coming driver with your high mounted light before you even know anything about an approaching vehicle.

          They'll be blinded no matter where your lightbar is in that situation. More to do with your visibility over your bonnet not being restricted. Also your roof mounted lights not lighting up your bonnet and distracting the driver. But a lot of people seem to get away with it.

            I've spent lots of time driving long distances at night time over the past 40 years including numerous Brisbane to Perth and return runs (non-stop) and Kalgoorlie to Perth and Kimberley to Perth along the main highways - main trucking routes. In recent years since the advent of LED technology I have noticed that because of the light output we have to dip our high beam much earlier. On some straight stretches you have to dip when you're still 5 - 6km away, sometimes even more. That means we're having to drive further on low beam through dangerous cattle and 'roo country. It's all good if there is nobody else on the road. And, of course, there are still the cowboys who will continue to drive on high beam with everything lit up and your eyeballs starting to boil. And then the jousting begins to see who has the most output.

              You could always turn off the lightbar first, then the high beam when the approaching vehicle comes closer.

                I've actually tried that and also running the fog lights along with the low beam seems to help.

                      Are they fog lights or driving lights? Not sure what ARB call them. But they throw the light out more to the sides which helps look for skippy to keep him safe.

                        Ha ha Bushbasher. Now that anecdote of yours reminds me of a past car I had when living in the bush where I had mounted 4 x Cibie Super Oscars across the roo bar and also upgraded the 2+2 headlight and high beam lights to 100 watt QH as well. I had 800 watts of lights at my disposal and I used to joke I could burn the paint off any belligerent truckie. People used to say that it looked like the sun aiming for them. Mind you it also cost me a fortune to upgrade the alterantor to a far higher output model to cope with the strain! Oh the things we do. Have to now get some better light for my new Prado but there are certainly plenty to choose from and the auto guys tell me there is no longer any need to upgrade alternators as the newer lights drain far less amps.

                          The stupid thing is in WA we have massive long distances that have plenty of wildlife, The DOT need to make less trips to Bali and more into the WA outback for there personal holidays

                              Hi all,

                              Interesting thread, as I was considering the latest (4D 15watt) 20 inch light bar to fit inside my bull bar centre loop. These new 20 inch 180W (15 watt) CREE units have a lens moulded into the "glass" face & have all rounded corners.

                              What is the strictest regs country wide about driving lights light's profile protruding beyond bull bar profile?

                              Note: I have spoken to Qld Tport (read the Qld Regs. Qld Tport first!) They said if you can demonstrate the fitted object does not significantly protrude & likely to cause injury i.e. It should not have sharp edges that extend significantly forward of the B/bar vertical & horizontal profile.

                              I see many large spotties with flat faces & sharp edges "significantly protruding" anyone had infringements with these in Qld or other states?


                              BTW has anyone fitted these new 20 inch light bars or, have a review of same?
