    What is a 'softroader'?
It mentions them in a 4WD mag I have and I assumed it was one of those AWD cars like the RAV4 but Im not sure.

You are correct. Generally a 'softroader' refers to an all wheel drive vehicle with lower ground clearance & and no low range e.g. Forrester/Outback, Rav4, X-trial etc etc. There is so many of them on the market these days. (yes I know 5spd Subarus have low range, but they are no 4wd)

    Cheers,
    Joel

      Yep, that is right pomp.

I would say any AWD without the low-range selector.

Not really "Low Range" just one extra "crawler" gear.... it's not of much use....

I registered the domain name www.softroader.com about 4 years ago when we owned a Nissan XTrail. I had grand plans for it but have never done anything other than pay my yearly renewal fees. I keep promising myself to do something with it one day, just not sure what.

Mine had low range lever, so got 5 low range gears and locked center diff. Dont know of any subi that had only one low gear? Toyota did that though on the tercel.

I had a Soft roader, 2lt auto rav 4 with a two inch pedders lift, 235/70/ 16 rubber and a full bash plate underneath, i did two offroad course's with normal 4wds and went everywhere they did, straddie once, fraser once and DI and bribie on many occasions, driven and set up correctly a soft roader can do many things that you can do in a proper 4wd.

That's right Hutch - the Xtrail was fantastic on the beach and in the bush, great power to weight ratio. Driven sensibly it took us everywhere we wanted to go.

I remember a few years ago up at Woodgate Beach, where you exit the beach there is a bit of a shelf then on to the boards up to the road. I waited patiently as a 90 series had five goes at getting up the slope, when he finally did he waited for me thinking I had no chance, the look on his face was priceless as we went up first go!!
