I've noticed the burn seems to occur every 200km and revs at 900rpm as opposed to 700 without the burn occuring. When the burn is occuring I use more fuel due to the 5th injector pouring diesel into the DPF unit. The other sign is the rubber burning smell when you stop. What sort of driving causes more soot to build up?

I used to be told to drive them hard and rev them up to clean out the soot in the older (mazda) DPF systems.Originally posted by cuda View PostI've noticed the burn seems to occur every 200km and revs at 900rpm as opposed to 700 without the burn occuring. I reckon the Mazda had a different system. I don't think it would matter if you drove the new Prado hard or not as its going to be creating more soot if the engine is pushed. I think the key with the new system is the injection of diesel into the dpf chamber to push the temp up really high. I do wonder what temp is required to burn the soot off? I wonder why some poeple report 1200rpm while others report 900rpm. Maybe the 900 is a minor burn while the 1200 is more major. Has anyone had the DPF light or message displayed?Originally posted by Turbo Piston View PostI used to be told to drive them hard and rev them up to clean out the soot in the older (mazda) DPF systems.
I was speaking to a guy who had to have his DPF replaced on a Mazda but that was with 200,000km on the clock which sounds like a decent amount of km's.2018 150 Series Crystal Pearl Prado VX 2.8l. 2 inch King springs and Bilstein shocks, Airtek TJM snorkel.

Mine has always been 1200 although of course it may have been 900 but I probably put this small increase in idle speed down to the air-con. So the answer is I don't know unfortunately, but have not seen any lights or warnings. A mechanic at Mandurah Toyota seemed to know how it had been programmed, I think he said that the raised tickover is prevented once the car is in motion.
There is some interesting information here: http://blog.toyota.co.uk/toyota-dpf-...ilter#comments
This applies to the UK and was written in 2014 so may not apply to the 2.8? It suggests all you need do is drive at over 40 mph for at least 10 minutes for the filter to complete it's regeneration program. I would dispute this as I have driven 50 Km down the freeway only to arrive home and find the engine running at 1200 as I back into the garage.Last edited by JohnLynn; 07-06-2016, 02:43 AM.

Yep thats what I'm saying also. Have driven to Mandurah and back only to have the burn occuring the next day in city traffic. This has now happened twice. I am starting to think there is a preventative maintenance kind of burn that occurs at every 200 to 300km even if the sensors aren't seeing a blockage. Probably a good thing.Originally posted by JohnLynn View PostMine has always been 1200 although of course it may have been 900 but I probably put this small increase in idle speed down to the air-con. So it seems that only the manual trans vehicles are running up to 1200rpm and the auto's 900rpm.
I can only guess that forcing the idle up to 1200 on the auto would 'push' the prado forward if you were stopped in gear...Cheers

Off memory - just under 2,000 rpm at 100km/h - I'll check tomorrow and change if wrong. Manual shift is excellent, smooth and direct.Originally posted by azzss View PostHey mate, how do you find the manual?, how many revs at 100km/h?
Cheers mate
I think the comment is right about 900 / 1200 rpm for auto and m/t respectively. Once the clutch is released, the revs immediately drop. No issue when off road at all.
Cheers

This is actually a good read: http://blog.toyota.co.uk/toyota-dpf-...ilter#comments
Mentions that is has a lifespan and then you have to replace the DPF. Anyone have an idea on the cost of the DPF? Be curious to see.
When you scroll down you can see the questions people are asking about the DPF and issues.

I did ring Toyota about this when I was going to buy the 2.8l and they said genuine was about $3600 fitted. If you ring Toyota and have a chat with them they say the diesel is injected just before the DPF and not into the engine as the article you show a link to does. They may have changed the system for the 2.8l. This newer injection method is more efficient and does not cause stress to the engine and components. Can anyone confirm that this is the case?Originally posted by Turbo Piston View PostThis is actually a good read: http://blog.toyota.co.uk/toyota-dpf-...ilter#comments

Yes its does inject after the engine. You can see it on the rhs of the engine thers is another injector and from memory i think it injects before the turbo.Originally posted by cuda View PostI did ring Toyota about this when I was going to buy the 2.8l and they said genuine was about $3600 fitted. At the specified ratio to fuel it sure would be!
"For blockage prevention & maintenance, add 375ml for every 60 litres of diesel."
That's two bottles (~$54) when you fill the tank at the recommended 5,000km or every service.
Doubt two many pp's would run it each fill at those prices...Cheers
