  • Kakadu - what diff with "radar cruise" option ?

I recently bought a 2011 Kakadu. Great Car, just love it.
But - It has the optional "radar cruise control" With this option I loose the crawl control, terrain assist and no rear diff lock, plus I lose a couple other tricks that I would have preferred to have in lieu off the Radar system.
My question is do I still have at least a Limited Slip Rear Diff, as I cannot find any info in the service book. Hope Toyota have not gone back to an open diff.
    Thanks for your help here.

You have traction control which is way better than the LSD

      A Toyota LSD anyway...

This article gives a pretty good write-up of the Kakadu variations for post-2010 models :-

I have the 2009 variant with the off-road pack instead of the safety pack so I do have the electronic rear diff lock

I'm pretty sure there is no LSD at the back.

I just checked the Toyota service manuals and it appears the rear diffs (carriers) are the same for all models (though the ratios change). It simply mention that the operational rear lock takes 50mL less oil. All diff oils are the same so that tells me there's no LSD.

I've also wondered why the never offered both options at launch. Was is a cost saving? or perhaps they couldn't get all the systems working together in time for launch. By 2012 (or thereabouts) both systems were standard. I do like my rear diff lock but I think the radar cruiser would have been nice too.

At least you can put an aftermarket diff lock in now.

Gee how odd as my 2016 Kakadu has all those options as standard. Install a couple of ARB front and rear diff locks as in my opinion these are much better than the Toyota trickery. Once I engage my lockers, I never use my Terrain Management system anyway and you can do without the crawl control by using a bit of common sense and gearing during steep decents. This TM system works by braking wheels and hence reducing momentum which seems pretty pointless when momentum is critical to not getting stuck. I have the radar cruise but I hate it and always turn it off as soon as I engage my cruise control and instead of keeping a safe distance gently, I find it applies the brakes dramatically to keep distance which really annoys me. I find it is the least useful device on my Kakadu.

Enjoy your Kakadu which is a great car as you say.

            Kakadu Dave.
