  • V6 Towing Outback Tour

    G'day all,

We've got a v6 150 series towing a offroad van (tare 1940, ATM 2500). We're planning on a trip through the middle and down the Gibb. We've even looked at the Tanami Track. Trouble is the van is new and we won't be able to hitch it up before we leave. I'd expect 20l/100 with the van on but concerned about hitting headwinds and letting the tyres down on the Tanami Track for example. I'd expect that could blow out the economy to 25-30/100 which would then see us running out of fuel!! Anyone got any real world experience care to comment? Anyone got any feedback on the availability of RON95/98 in remote parts? Last time we ran it on 91 it used a fair bit more...

    Cheers!

In a lot of that area the petrol available is OPAL. Not sure of the octane rating but my V6 120 ran fine with it over thousands of kms and didn't use any more than the usual guzzle. On the Tanami run both the car and van at less than 30 psi and keep the speed down to 80 and you should have no problems. I believe that Rabbit Flat is closed but get fuel at last place possible westbound on the Tanami and again at Billiluna at the western end. Just check opening hours AND days for these places. Carry a jerry or 2 and empty them into your main tank every 100 km or so. At this time of the year you are most likely to get tailwinds [easterlies] between Alice and Halls Creek.[anti clockwise winds around the dominant high pressure systems in winter.
