Keeping Records

G'day all,
Just thought I'd get a bit of a discussion going as to how far people go with keeping records for their car.
We all know that keeping service records is important but how far do people go?
I myself keep every receipt for anything I buy for the car at all, right down to parker bulbs, cleaning products, tools kept in the car. I've never been the one to keep fuel receipts though or keep any log book of km/fuel usage or anything.
Interesting to know what others do.

Im relatively anal when it comes to keeping recipts for my car. not so much for the small things, but if its more than $100 I keep the receipt and file it in my "Car" folder in my filing cabinet.
As for fuel, my lease tracks that for me.

Aside from the returning/warranty receipt thing I feel that it is important to hand it over to the new owner in the future. On selling the car my opinion is to hide nothing at all. The new owner will be given all the receipts, links to my PP posts and a truthful record of what the car has been used for. Personally it would make me feel a lot better about the whole thing.

Major purchases for warranties
Fuel usage through Fuelly App just for info - going to try Gas Tracker+ as it syncs with fuelly but tracks service costs

I scan and upload to evernote for anything significant, or a car service etc.

Through SG Fleet I have to ability to track various things as shown in the image below. It is rather helpful.

For the Prado I simply update the service book and major expenses I keep the receipt in a filing cabinet.
For my daily driver (Jazz) I keep everything but that's because I have to for tax claiming reasons.

I have kept mileage details since new and this shows the following averages.

Keep complete records and have turned over past cars to new owners with a complete file.

Whats the point of keeping the recites for every thing ever spent on the car the previous owner of my truck did that I don't care what the bill was for cleaning the carpet in 2007 there was heaps of things just as useless, I'm still amendment the valve clearance services were just signed off and never done I don't bother it upsets me when I add up how much money I've wasted on it. When buying a used car never trust whats written in the service book too many times people just tick off things that weren't done.

Nice to keep track of expenses, maintenance, fuel usage etc especially, but I know where your coming from Steve.

This week at 90k service, told I need new diff/transfer oils from a car bought at 85k with a logbook service entry for 80k service at 83k. Oils clearly not done, outside statutory warranty.

When I sold my hilux with 300 thou on it the bloke that come up from Bega (I'm in Penrith) said he only come to buy mine because I was the only one with a 16 year old hilux (2.8D) with full service history including every single receipt in clouding wiper blades or globes so he new I was anal about looking after it. I just sold my Prado and had every receipt if spent also including wiper blades etc, I think it pays off especially if you want top dollar. I don't even keep the log books in the car because I don't want them getting damaged or lost or stolen (if some one breaks in). I also won't touch a car with out full service history or log books. If I was buying the car I don't expect other people to keep every receipt for eh wiper blades but must have books and receipts for every service and oil change

Yaeh but when they don't do the whole service just an oil change and sign it off its not worth a #### full of cold water it happens alot more than you might like to think when its meant to be an expensive service and the owner only wants an oil change because hes going to sell it soon what is the mechanic meant to do then used car salesmen doctor the book. All I'm saying is when buying a 2nd hand car don't pay alot extra for a book full of lies.
