  • New diesel Hilux for towing a caravan - how will the engine go

Have been towing my van, with the 150 petrol, around parts of Qld since the beginning of June, and off the website since then.

I placed a deposit on a new van, and it won't be built until 2017 (my choice to delay it, so I am locked in before the next price rise happens for a new build and accessories)

Only problem is the van will have a tare of around 2,350 kgs, and the ATM will be around 2,750 kgs, which legally will exclude the 150 from towing the new van. So I have to sell my 150 at some stage, not happy considering what I have spent on the extras.

Having always been a petrol man, I will have to look at a diesel for the next tow vehicle. A 200 series would be nice, but a bit much to afford, so looking at the new Hilux with the 2.8 diesel. The Hilux can tow 3,200 kgs in the auto, 3,500 kgs in the manual - prefer the auto due to some old hip and knee injuries. There are other tow vehicles (Isuzu, BT-50, etc) but usually buy Toyota.

Can anyone advise how the 150 2.8 diesel tows a van near the maximum 2,500 limit, would the extra 250 kgs make much of a difference to the Hilux, and would a chip help a bit more or put extra strain on the engine? Usually drive at the speed limit, and like a bit of grunt to overtake, hence the petrol vehicles.

The young bloke at a Toyota dealership in Qld reckons the new 2.8 is the best engine so far, but he was not trying to sell me one, as I told him I was not buying until I returned to Sydney.

I have noted many times that diesel owners prefer to fit an ATM cooler system, which is standard on the petrol models. Any problems with the 2.8 so far?

    Thanks guys,
    Dave.

Have you looked in to the Fortuner perhaps. It's specs seem to fit your needs though I haven't driven one myself though have been meaning to when I pull my finger out. I think it can do 2800kgs in auto and 3000kgs in manual. They are certainly getting popular up here in the Pilbara where the cruiser and (more so) the Prado are by far the most popular towing vehicles and I wonder if this is due to the extra towing capacity as well as price.

If you currently like the wagon style of the Prado but need the extra towing capacity then this maybe something to consider. On paper, the top spec Fortuner looks like better value than the GXL Prado in my opinion which is priced similarly.

As an option a guy from work got his 150 prado suspension upgraded, rated to tow 3000kgs with an engineers cerificate so he could upgrade his van to a larger one. Cant give you specifics but could be worth a few phone calls if you want to stay with the prado.

If you choose to lug a big van around, you need a 200.
        The 2.8 will struggle.
IMO towing that sort of weight you should want to keep control of it best chance possible. Life or death.......

Thanks for that Macro. I had a look at one today, max is 2,800kgs for the auto which is around the ATM of the new van, and I would suspect the suspension would need an upgrade, whereas the Hilux has an upgrade to it's build and would not need any extra spent.

I do like the wagon, however, the Hilux dual cab does look good, and has plenty of extras on the top model.

Yes ####, I would like a 200, but having retired, money is not growing on my money tree any more.

Mine is a petrol, not a diesel. I think only the diesel can be upgraded, and an upgrade would mean the petrol lugging another 400 kgs over the current van weight.

Pulls 2T fine. There will probably be only a small notable difference with the extra 500kg. Considering your talking lugging it around with the LUX you wont struggle as the kerb weight is far less than the Prado.

                  Hi Yowie
Gross comb on HiLux is 5650kg from memory, Gross veh is 3000kg. So realistically towing is only 2650kg if you want max weight in Hilux.
Weight taken out of HiLux will get you up top max tow.

I have a new one on order, supposed to be now but wont be available till end August.
I have a SR coming with a gvm upgrade being fitted before first rego. GCM is still only 5650kg
                  Cheers
                  Charlie
