Have been towing my van, with the 150 petrol, around parts of Qld since the beginning of June, and off the website since then.
I placed a deposit on a new van, and it won't be built until 2017 (my choice to delay it, so I am locked in before the next price rise happens for a new build and accessories)
Only problem is the van will have a tare of around 2,350 kgs, and the ATM will be around 2,750 kgs, which legally will exclude the 150 from towing the new van. So I have to sell my 150 at some stage, not happy considering what I have spent on the extras.
Having always been a petrol man, I will have to look at a diesel for the next tow vehicle. A 200 series would be nice, but a bit much to afford, so looking at the new Hilux with the 2.8 diesel. The Hilux can tow 3,200 kgs in the auto, 3,500 kgs in the manual - prefer the auto due to some old hip and knee injuries. There are other tow vehicles (Isuzu, BT-50, etc) but usually buy Toyota.
Can anyone advise how the 150 2.8 diesel tows a van near the maximum 2,500 limit, would the extra 250 kgs make much of a difference to the Hilux, and would a chip help a bit more or put extra strain on the engine? Usually drive at the speed limit, and like a bit of grunt to overtake, hence the petrol vehicles.
The young bloke at a Toyota dealership in Qld reckons the new 2.8 is the best engine so far, but he was not trying to sell me one, as I told him I was not buying until I returned to Sydney.
I have noted many times that diesel owners prefer to fit an ATM cooler system, which is standard on the petrol models. Any problems with the 2.8 so far?
Thanks guys,
Dave.
