  • Optima Yellow Top for Cranking Battery?

    Hi guys,

The 120 D4D battery is 2 starts away from dead.

Looking to replace it, though keeping in mind I will be putting in a dual battery kit soon.

Has anyone used a Yellow Top Optima for starting battery? Or is it overkill?

    Cheers,

    KS

I've put a D27F Optima in as our main battery, lighter, better charging rate/time, high output...... I've got no complaints

I've also got the D34 as our Aux Battery - Good, but really need a bigger capacity if u plan to stay any where for a few days and want to run a fridge - but it almost fully charges in a 1 or 2hrs of driving.

Save the yellow top for the aux battery, get a blue top for the main.

Why ? The only difference is the terminals.
I've got a blue top as the aux in mine as I wanted the extra terminals.

Ok guys, blue & yellow are the same battery. Eg: d34yellow & d34M the blue, marine has accessory terminals.
They weigh 20kg's. good for both cranking & deep cycle. 750cca.
You must have the light grey case for deep cycle, optima do confuse things.

In Prados we recommend the use of d34 red for main battery. It's a cranker, it's light at 17kg, 800cca has plenty to start your Prado anytime. Minimise weight to help prevent gaurd cracking. Secure your battery's.
This also allows for terminals around the correct side for the cranker.

I use d34m & also used d34 yellow or accessories & fridge & find it more than capable with 40 or 50 ltr fridge.
Rather than go bigger, if you are parking for a while Invest in solar panels.

You should be able to get both for about $650 delivered (east coast), talk to me if you have trouble finding this.

            Cheers,

            ####.

Thanks guys, I am getting confused. Have done a bit of reading.

A mechanic mate of mine has recommended the DELKOR 27HR-710 Battery - 710CCA Calcium. Its about $220ish. Does anyone else run DELKOR?

              Cheers

Check out Goodchild Enterprises as you're in Perth.
They had both yellow and blue Optimas under $300 when I got mine.

Just be careful, I bought my blue top from a retail outlet in Perth at a cheap price <$300 and it didn't last 2 years. The guys at Optima in Melbourne were very good about it and offered to discount another even though I bought it via a non-approved distributor and it was probably a grey import / old stock. Didn't take them up on the offer and will go another way with the next dual battery set up.
