  • Dust inside fuel flap

I have a 150 and when I am out on the gravel or sandy roads I am getting dust inside the fuel flap.

I though it may have been that thin black cord attached to the cap getting jammed against the rubber seal and creating a small gap but I have tried to carefully close the flap with that cord away from the seal yet still getting dust inside the flap.

I have considered removing the cord/vinyl bit attaching the cap to the spout to be sure that it is not forcing the rubber seal ajar but that would allow the cap to fall to the ground if I happen to bump it when fuelling up.

The dust is all around the filling cap and neck, I have to carefully wipe it clean before taking the cap off to refuel. I am a bit concerned I may miss a bit and it ends up in the tank, I realise the fuel filter should get it but I would prefer not to get it in there at all.

I presume others have the same problem, how did you solve it

To be honest, I've never given it a thought. Theres typically plenty of dust in behind the flap for me...
Interested in if I should think about it in the future.

      Hi Spilsy,

You have it too so perhaps everyone has the problem.

When I saw the rubber seal in there I assumed it was to stop the dust and water getting inside the flap and then getting into the tank after we attack the tough stuff.

The first time it happened to me was in Birdsville and I spent 20 minutes carefully cleaning around the spout before taking the fuel cap off to fuel up.

This time I filled in Derby and then did 800k of dirt and gravel along a very dry Gibb River Road, at Katherine it was another 20 minutes cleaning before I could fill up. At least now I stop and check before stopping at the pump, not like in Birdsville, the guy waiting got a bit pi***d there.

I will have another look at this cord thing, I might be able to remove it and see if it makes any difference. I did notice that there is a drain hole inside the flap and thought perhaps it gets in through there but decided that was unlikely, I could try blocking it up and find out I guess.

Anyone else have a problem with dust inside the fuel flap ?

        G'day Ozimacca
120 series petrol in our case but found out recently that not only dust getting behind the flap door, its finding its way under the cap also.
Mind you, many dusty kms between fill ups.
Bit concerning when you open the cap and the vacuum from within the tanks, probably sucks this shite passed the cap.
I think on the next trip I will try covering the cap with a small piece of toweling or the like stuffed in the flap cavity.
        Cheers

Just came back from Birdsville with over 1000km on dirt, plenty of dust behind flap never considered it a problem.

I don't. I figure that cars didn't have flaps over the filler cap for the first 100 years of existence and are only there for looks and aerodynamics. Have never had a problem with fuel in my 35 years 4wding, so figure that the fuel filter is there for a reason and as long as you change that at regular intervals then you won't have a problem. I think there is more ocd creeping in than dust.

Don't forget that there is a small drain hole in the bottom section of the rubber cowling that allows spilt fuel to drain onto the road via under the body. You will never stop the ingress of dust here. That's part of the reason why we all have fuel filters.

Ok, so it is a standard feature, after bashing down a bit of dust I will clean in there before stopping at the pump.

That is my current solution so I will live with it.
