  • DashCamOwners members?

    Hi all,

Are there any members of the DCO club here? I assume there would be a few, but quick search in the forum didn't trigger any results for some reason.

I'm thinking of putting in a dashcam into my Prado and was wondering what you guys (and gals) think of the units advertised on the site?

    Thanks.

Yup. There was a group buy organised a longtime ago from https://dashcamsaustralia.com.au/. Either a blackvue or a vicovation

Blackvue/Street Guardian/Vicovation are premium cameras and good.

I went for the Blackvue over the vico as it was the smaller at the time. I dont need a screen and the BV is a discrete unit. It does seem to eat Scandisk SD cards though. Thinking of upgrading to the two camera 650. Or just getting a cheap rear one...

Thanks. I don't need a screen either - if something interesting happens, I'll take out the card and transfer the contents to a PC anyway. Not sure about having front and back as separate cameras - I watched the explanation about that on the site and I get the logic of being able to identify anyone running into you from the rear, but I reckon you'd be able to stop that car from driving away anyway, and if not - you'd have enough evidence on the rear (in damage) and then the front camera to present for any claims. (knocking on wood) I've never had anyone hit me in the rear and drive away - and I was hit in the rear 5 or 6 times in the last 15 or so years.

I've got the Blackvue 650 and it works okay, although it really relies on having a WiFi hotspot in the car. Support is very much 'English is not their first language' style... I'd go with a Thinkware F770 if I had to chose again.

Thanks - wow, F770 is not a cheap unit, but I definitely like some features (if they work) especially the parking recording - I had someone swipe the door and driver's side fender on my previous car and drive away. Didn't think about WiFi - need to read up on it some more, as I'm not sure why a cam needs WiFi?

Wifi is the mechanism for the rear camera to speak to the front camera.

I have tried many DashCam and Blackvue seems to be the best quality dashcam. However, I think the Mini 0806 with GPS is a pretty good alternative interm of price and built/video quality. It has GPS built-in so I think it's a good product if you want to find an alternative for BLACKVUE DR450.

Also look at ddPai M6+ at about $180, has a good YT review by Techmoan, I also bought a hard wired kit (extra $16).
Happy to provide feedback on mine once fitted and tested.

                    Negative on most mainstream cameras..

Blackvue/ Smarty/ Dteg/ etc (mainstream 2 camera models) all use hardwired cameras in the rear..
I not seen any that use WIfi. (And yes I'm quite experienced in said game).

If looking for a single camera with best bang for buck I would look at the Dteg Smarty BX1500 or if you want to spend more money the Blackvue range.

Most of the mainstream cameras now have parking mode as a standard (Including the 2 above)

Thanks all for the feedback and specific models that you use/tried. I'll start reading up on specs/reviews of all those cams mentioned here

WiFi is normally used with an App to control the camera and to connect to your phone hotspot for internet access to upload footage. It's the upload requirement and the stupid cost of internet access in Oz that would lead me away from the BlackVue at the moment, unless you use the older firmware.

I'd prefer a camera where I can physically take out an SD card and transfer footage to my computer if I need to (otherwise it should delete old footage automatically). No WiFi or anything like that.

I had the SJ4000. Was a cheapie and lasted a few years. Footage was pretty good, but nighttime isn't the best. With Australia's hot weather, it is wise to install a dashcam with a capacitor instead of a Lithium battery.

As for wifi, it is usually to connect to your phone to change camera settings via an app, view the footage and also to download footage to the phone. Pretty sure all dashcams have microSD cards. The trick is to get one big enough so that a day's driving doesn't cause the card to run out of space so that it loop records before you get a chance to remove it from the camera.
