Hi I have a pair of headrest mounted dvd players I had fitted at Autobarn. They have a sd card slot. Does anyone know if I can put movies on a sd card and play it that way for the kids. The dvds are a pain in the ass. What format would they need to be in. They have a micro usb port that I've tried plugging in a hard drive with movies on but it doesn't recognize it. Any help would be great

Yeah it does depend what your SD slot is used for, I'd say it would support photos/music and videos but you will need to do your homework and read through the manual to see what types of formats it supports i.e. mp3/jpeg/etc. If it didn't come with a manual then Google the make and model number and you should find it online.

Honestly. Google works well here. I went to the autobarn website and see that they sell Gator brand headrest players. A quick google shows results from eBay with all the specs. Is this the type you have?

As for not recognising a hard disk. Could that be the filing system format of the drive is incompatible. Your drive might be NTFS and the DVD player might only read FAT32 or something. Also, the DVD player may not be able to drive a portable drive, only a USB memory stick due to output power issues. I've seen this issue on some TVs and some home DVD players with USB ports.
