    Gday guys and gals,

Im new to these forums and looking at becoming a glorified Prado owner in the next 4-6 months, but i cant seem to decide what to get.

At present im stuck, 2012 GX D4d 1kd-ftv roughly around 38-39k or the 2012-13 GLX petrol V6 for the same amount.

Im not fussed on the extras you get from the GLX, but im am getting information overload with the problems that im seeing from the D4D, but i dont seem to be seeing much from the V6 petrol. Seals seat pipes injectors services every 5k just to keep the oil cleaner and then the egr valve, it just seems like a big head truck to be honest and i cant seem to get past the $1.40 every 100k that ill be saving in fuel to go the D4D. As much as i would like the diesel i cant see a reason why at present and would like someone to help and either turn my head towards the really good things ill be seeing from the motor over the price its going to cost to keep it on the road.

    D4D
    service every 5k
bigger service every 10 at a shop to make sure everything is working right and within spec
Then you have the 40k seal change over for well over 600 and probably not including service cost and the egr valve clean and what ever else i find to make the car run better for longer
Then you have 100k better to do the whole lot injectors seals pipes egr
And then the 150k timing belt

    Petrol
service probably every 10k ( or thats what i would do anyway
no massive expenses on things thats arent there
timing chain instead of belt so no need to change
Normal wear and tear change items that im guessing would be the same as a diesel

Now call me ignorant all you want but ive been trying to absorb all this information to get the best from my cash for over 2 weeks and still coming up with the same argument with myself, so im calling you top people to help me sort this problem out

    Cheers

I have had both. I bet the petrol one at that price have a lot less km on them to boot. Lots of info on here on this but my experience suggests that it takes in excess of 100,000 km to be in front on the diesel [ which i now have]. If you are planning to do a lot of towing and/or high kms then the diesel is the go. If you are doing 10,000 km a year or less it could take you 10 years of petrol use before you are behind with that choice. Drive both and decide what you like and consider the above. Both are good in their own way.

The 2012 D4D should be rid of the issues you have read about. Initial observation and thorough service should be enough to ensure you will get stress free use of the D4D.
First thing with a D4D is drain the oil, regardless of what the service history is. Let it drain for a couple hours. Get under it with a small LED torch and have a look up its sump drain hole. If you see a gunky black oil pick up screen, remove that small sump pan and pick up screen and give it a good wash. Put it all back together, using either a new gasket or GREY MAXX silicone. Put the sump plug back in. Change oil filter and fill with 7.4L of nice clean good quality oil (I prefer something like a 5W-30 or 10W-40 synthetic).
In 5,000km drain the oil...again for a couple of hours. Check oil pick screen again. If clean, replace sump plug and fill with fresh oil again. Filter good till next oil change.
And use decent fuel. Consensus seems to be, in order of favouritism around here: 1. BP Ultimate Diesel; and, 2. Caltex Vortex Diesel.

In the meantime, ring your local Toyo Dealer and have your D4D's VIN handy. Ask them if it has been in to any of their dealerships to have its Customer Experience Program check for Injector Seats. If not, book it in then. It will be an overnight stay for them to check diagnostics first start of the morning (when stone cold). If injectors are all OK, they will change out the seats for you (if your vehicle complies with the 'recall').

Other than that, that's it! Optional additional mods include an EGR clean (once off deal) and EGR 7mm plate fitted at same time. That will keep the majority of the shit out of your engine oil and intake system and will lengthen the life of your engine overall.

I bought a 2010 V6 with 80,000 on the clock and have enjoyed almost 60,000 of trouble free kms now. Big fuel tank helps ride out the petrol price cycles and I would get another V6 without even thinking twice about it but I'll be keeping this one for quite some time. The power is great.
