Tackling the Tanami

Thinking of pulling a Kedron X Country by my 2007 Grande down the Tanami Rd in June. Has anybody done this road with a caravan?

Like all outback roads the actual condition of the road varies with how much traffic it has had and when the grader last went through. That said , it is a major outback highway and used extensively by trucks, buses and outback community members. It should be fine but check much closer to the date. Each time I have been up or down it I have always seen caravans on it.

Need someone here who has actually done it folks. My understanding is that a lot of it now is sealed and the bits which are not are relatively easy. Correct me if I am wrong.

G'day... I might not be much help, but I've done it about 18 months ago. No dramas with the road, except for corrugations. We sat on 100ish for most of it with a few cars in the convoy carrying 1,500kg trailers.

Having said that, there have recently been lots of rain here and parts of the road are still opening up to semi's. I was at the Tanami mine last week and they have only just restarted production, no truck access (for diesel and chemicals) for over 60 days!

The one upside to all that, is that now once the road is reopened, you should see it graded and nicer soon enough!

Majority of it is not sealed. Only the first 40km ish from Alice end and a few parts that are being sealed up to about Yuendumu. It's wherever the road works are at and they are constantly improving it I think. Most sections are only a km or so sealed when I did it.

Vast majority... is corrugated red dirt (or mud as another cyclone approaches the Kimberley!)
