I'd go north as well. You can avoid ADL peak hour traffic and if you are going through Port Wakefield on the night before or the first day of a long weekend, it's all going to be jammed up.
Renmark and Mildura are big towns so you can plan an overnighter there if you wanted to.

We go that way on the way to the Flinders ranges and usually overnight in Waikerie SA.
S
Ballarat if on the western highway and Princes hwy is further south.
The Great Ocean Rd is a great drive to Adelaide but probably not with a2 ton Van if you are in any sort of hurry.155 SX with dual battery and Polyairs in the rear springs..

Just did the Ballarat way, as we had to meet up with someone in Ararat. The drive through the eastern suburbs of Adelaide, even on a weekend, was very slow. Avoid it if you can. Who are the morons that build freeways to a city, without a continuing freeway through/around the city? (looking at you too, Eastern Freeway in Melbourne, where they spend a billion dollars to not build the continuing freeway!)2016 Crystal Pearl Auto VX 2.8, TJM Bar, Safari Snorkel, Cooper AT/3, OME 50mm lift, Dual batts

Just been to Mildura (from city Adelaide) and came back via Renmark. A very easy drive with low traffic. Passing through Adelaide is easier than other big cities but still much slower and less enjoyable than the smaller towns. Mildura is a great stop-off for food or overnight. Nice big bakery in Renmark.
