I have an Iridium 9555 with the external antenna got the kit for $650 ( all acces inc ) second hand and have never had an issue. I have a $10p/m plan on the home phone account with Telstra and although the calls are expensive its only for piece of mind and emergency.
The only thing that drove me away from the Inmarsat Isatphone Pro is that you cant dial 000 or 112 on them whereas you can with the iridium. So if your stuck and dont have the local number for the emergency services it could make direct contact tricky.
My parents got a 50% rebate as they are travelling for 180 days in the next 2 years in area's outside normal mobile coverage. Most sat phone sellers know the rules and how to ensure you get the rebate.
