Information on the Coorong? in SA and the Great Ocean Road

Hi, apologies if in the wrong section. I'm looking at doing a trip from Newcastle to Adelaide via Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. Also want to pay a visit to the coorong in SA. Does anyone have any information on these areas?? I have been to the coorong when very young and would like to visit again. Looking for info on 4wd tracks camping permits etc

Its well worth a trip thru the coorong. I would do it now as well, as due to the declining Murray river levels the coorong is pretty well blocked off from the ocean/river and dying quickly.
You can cross at about three points all clearly marked on the maps in links below. If in a very well set up 4x4 and good (extensive) beach driving experience in very soft sand you can enter the beach at Kingston or even Robe and drive all the way to the tip at the Murray Mouth.
You will see nothing but Sand dunes and water this way though.
Towns to visit: Robe check out the lighthouse area and Little dip.


There is also some good campsites along the way that you stay right on the waters edge (if there is any water)..

I would also allow a few days around Mt Gambier as it is a beautiful place and has lots to see. Umpherstons sinkhole is one free place to check out (and at night Possums can be fed by hand in the holes in the walls under the overhangs).
Lots of limestone pools to snorkel in as well, or just great spots to visit. Blue lake etc.
Around Nelson and the Glenelg river is also quite nice for a stop.

The ocean road is awesome, do a quick google and you will find heaps of info on it. Spend a couple days at least if you want to do it properly.

Also worth a drive if your going to the end of the corong around to Goolwa and Victor Harbour for an overnighter. Some beautiful areas around there.
You can also see at Milang and spots how bad the Murray river is currently, Milangs water is out by hundreds of metres !!!!
Goolwa Beach you can actually drive onto the beach off Beach Road, track behind the kiosk will take you to the Murray Mouth via the Beach. Well worth a vist as its a once in a lifetime for a lot to stand at the end of the mighty (Not) Murray river. Its 11kms by sand and is fairly tame sand driving, just lower pressures. The servo in Goolwa 2 kms from beach has Air for going up again if needed.

Coorong National Park

Edward Gregory Leaman, Director of National Parks and Wildlife, has authorised the closure to vehicular traffic, part of the Coorong National Park from:

9 am on Friday, 11 July 2008 until further notice.

The closure applies to the whole of the Younghusband Peninsula north of a line traversing the Peninsula from east to west commencing 3km north of 42 Mile Crossing.

This effectively closes to vehicles, the Younghusband Peninsula 3 km north of 42 Mile Crossing to its most northern tip at the mouth of the Murray River (35o 33'21.95" South, 138o52'53.34" East). Visitors may continue to access this part of the park on foot.

The purpose of the closure is in the interest of public safety following severe erosion within this part of the reserve due to recent weather events.
