  • Battery, ABS, Handbrake and Airbag light

After a little advice if anyone can help? Our 2008 Prado had to be towed after the battery light, ABS light, handbrake light (when not on), and airbag light came on while driving. We then lost acceleration. The car could restart using the second battery but not accelerate. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Its gone into limp mode.. Need to get a code reader put on it to see what codes have been thrown.. If no code reader you can disconnect the battery for <> 30 mins to reset the computer. See if it starts and drives OK then. Getting the codes read however will make it a lot easier to know whats going on.

Your description, kind of points towards a failed battery as well, perhaps not charging, are you 100% sure of the lights? Battery light could be a failed alternator (not charging) Meaning it ultimately died. Low batteries make them do strange things.. I would call the RACQ (if in them) and have them come look at it, they should be able to check if charging and read the codes too.

Thank you for your reply, both batteries were replaced in April and are reading as full. Good advice about disconnecting the battery, will give that a go. It is definitely in limp mode, it just got to a suitable towing spot. It cranks over on the second battery like they’re dead, but they are fully charged.

How have you checked they are fully charged? You need to multimeter them, then get the car started to see if the alternator is charging them. I had a brand new battery fail on me just 6 days in, a couple months ago... You never know whats going on till testing stuff.

sounds to me that these batteries need to be load tested, they may read 12v until a load is put on them , then may only read 10.5 thus the slow turn of starter.

Both batteries are reading 13.5V on a multimeter and are drawing 2V on start up.

I hope you mean they are dropping BY 2 volts not dropping to 2V or they have had it!

He said Drawing, I take that to mean its dropping to 11.5 volt on startup.. So is this the voltage sitting? What is it when car is running?

Yes I didn't like to start complaining that drawing usually means current, and I couldn't see how starting current could be measured with a multimeter. In fact I tried to delete my post but didn't know how, sorry my contribution wasn't very helpful.

Why does it not crank on the starting battery?

What is the voltage on the starting battery when you crank with the second battery disconnected.

Have you checked that the battery terminals on the starting battery are clean and tight.

haven't lost the serpentine / belt?

have you checked voltage at the starter motor
